an inspiring musical journey
In 2016, Y-Films, the youth entertainment division of Yash Raj Films, launched India’s first transgender music band – 6 Pack Band. The six members of the band (all are transgender) were selected from a group of approximately 200 who auditioned to join the band. Talking about this gamechanger initiative in India’s entertainment industry, Ashish Patil, Head of Y-Films, during a media interaction said-
We see eunuchs begging at traffic signals. Nobody hires them; There is no respect for them as they are abandoned by the family and society.
Y-Films has also successfully roped in actress Anushka Sharma and singer Sonu Nigam to support this initiative.
A gamechanger in India’s entertainment industry
Since their explosive debut in 2016 with a cover version of Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”, the band has been entertaining their audiences with their unique material. Anushka Sharma has given voice in the beginning of the first song- Hum Hain Happy.
Some of the band’s other popular hits are:
‘Aye Raju’ – starring Hrithik Roshan
‘Raula Paye Gaya’ – Official song of Salman Khan’s movie ‘Sultan’
‘Hil Pori Hila’ – starring Arjun Kapoor
‘Sab Rab De Bande’ – which also includes the voice of Sonu Nigam
Gaining international recognition, the band gave the only Indian performance at the Cannes Festival in 2017. 6 Pack Band has also been the winner of the Cannes Grand Prix Glass Lions Award and nine MVs Awards.
meet the members
Here are the six members of the ”6 Pack Band”:
Raveena Jagtap (35): Always a fighter
Talking about her journey and past, Raveena says-
My journey has been very good, because I am living with the community and helping them get respect in the society. I am very protective of my community. I have always been a fighter. There are problems, but it is our job to handle them and be happy.”
She wants to take her band to a new level and also do some Bollywood songs. On her connection with music she says-
I have been associated with music since childhood. I love singing.”
Asha Jagtap (24): Had an unpleasant life
Asha, who belongs to the transgender community, has faced many difficulties in life. Talking about her upbringing in the transgender community, Asha says-
My life has not been pleasant. The problems we face in our daily lives are different from the everyday problems faced by other people. Acceptance is an issue for us. Not being accepted is a feeling we live with every day.”
Asha Jagtap wants to establish ‘6 Pack Band’ internationally and make it one of the top bands in the world. She considers music as an inherent part of her community and says-
We sing badhaai (songs that kinnars sing on special occasions like festivals and marriages). This is how most of us are connected to music. We have always been musicians, but only now have people started paying attention to it.
Bhavika Patil (27): Want to bring change
Bhavika has another story of trauma; Because he was not accepted by his family. While sharing this unpleasant information she says-
I was not accepted by my family and was left to fend for myself. I started working as a nurse in a clinic, but I felt sad when I saw that I was not treated equally. My colleague, who joined after me, got a promotion. I never got a raise, so I had to quit.”
Although Bhavika was never musically inclined, she has been enjoying it ever since she joined the band. On her connection with music she says-
When I found out that something like this (Six Pack Band) was coming, I didn’t want to miss being a part of it.
However, Bhavika’s family never supported her to join a music band like this. she adds,
It hurts when the people you love most are not there for you when you need them.
Now Bhavika is so fond of music that she wants to bring change in the society through music, she says-
I want to bring change in the society through music. “I want people to know what we can do as a community.”
Chandni Suvarnakar (34): Likes singing
Unlike Bhavika, Chandni considers herself “lucky”. Because his parents have always supported him. Chandni says-
They supported who I was and what I did. They are happy in my happiness.”
He was fond of music since childhood. On her singing happiness she says-
I don’t know if I’m good or bad, but I like to sing.
Fida Khan (24): Wants to be a soulful musician
Like Chandni, Fida has also been fortunate to have the support of her parents; Because they happily accepted his sexual orientation. However, they have been somewhat more restrictive in nature. Fida says-
They wouldn’t let me leave the house because people in my area didn’t want me to live there.”
Fida works with an NGO named Humsafar. She is also demanding an ashram for her community in Mumbai. With Michael Jackson as his idol, music just came to Fida’s mind. Talking about her connection with music she says-
I never took any training. I used to watch TV and movies. This is how I learned to sing. I want to be a soulful and melodious musician.
Komal Jagtap (22): The strings are still attached
Like Fida and Chandni, Komal was not as lucky; Her parents disowned her when she was young. Sharing this sad story she says-
He stopped talking to me. But when Six Pack Band came out, my family started talking to me again. I did what our community does for a living. I faced the same problems that the transgender community faces in this country. But the band changed my life.
Although her family is still angry with Komal, she continues to live in her community. Komal says-
I still live with the community. I am happy with what I am doing. I like music very much.”
