Fifty Shades of Grey It shook the industry when it premiered in 2015.
Inspired by the gripping novels of EL James, the franchise starred Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steel and Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey, the dominant man she fell in love with. Their chemistry centered the story in three films.
The risky plot, which flirted with BDSM and featured multiple intimate scenes, made the franchise a risk for Hollywood, but it paid off. Years later, the films remain some of the highest-grossing R-rated projects.
Casting for such a big project generated a lot of buzz at the time. Although we have a hard time imagining anyone other than Dakota playing Anastasia, she wasn’t the only actress in the running.
In fact, we were able to round up 10 actresses who were considered for the role. One became a famous Marvel star. Another explained that they rejected the offer for fear of being typecast, and many of them commented that the audition process was uncomfortable.
