Zoe Saldana on Raising 3 Children and Teaching Them to ‘Celebrate’ Their Femininity

Zoe Saldana opened up about being a mother of three and the lessons she’s trying to teach them.

The Marvel actress, 45, welcomed her twin sons Cy and Bowie, 8, and Zen, 6, with her husband Marco.

In a new interview, she talked about how they divide parenting responsibilities. Zoe also explained that she is teaching her sons to accept any feminine traits instead of trying to hide them.

Speaking to People, she said they were teaching their children to “honor themselves, their femininity, to also celebrate their feminine selves.”

Zoe went on to explain: “We are very hard on our children in the same way we are hard on women. And children are encouraged to be strong and suppress their emotions. And then once you learn to do that for so long, you become completely excommunicated from your feelings.”

“We definitely understood the tasks and accepted them knowing that we were raising children in a time when women’s movements are so important,” she added.

The actress highlighted that children are “a mirror” of their parents, a fact of which she is aware: “It definitely makes you much more aware of what you have been in your entire life.”

How do she and Marco handle things? It is a game of “constantly adapt and readjust.”

“In certain seasons, I am the one who can take charge of all the household operations so that my husband can mentally separate and focus on his creativity. And other seasons, when I go completely back into work mode, then we disconnect,” he said. “I don’t think there will ever be an equal share of the load, so I think it’s important to be absolutely transparent with your bandwidth, where you are, and how you’re doing.”
