You. Sharaf Ali is a former Indian professional footballer who mainly played as a defender and midfielder. He played most of his professional football career with the Kerala Police team and played in Kolkata for two seasons. He captained the Indian national football team and the Kerala state football team in various competitions. While playing for Kerala Police Club, U. Sharaf and VP Sathyan formed one of the best defensive partnerships in the domestic league and helped Kerala Police become one of the best football clubs in the country.

You. Sharaf Ali was born on Saturday, 30 May 1964 (age 58 years as as of 2022) in Ericode, Malappuram, Kerala. He studied at Christ College Irinjalakuda. Sharaf Ali was selected by the Kerala Police team for the 1984 Santosh Trophy competition, but decided not to participate as he was preparing for his pre-degree examinations. Sharaf Ali was approached by the Left Democratic Front to contest the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections as an LDF-backed independent candidate from his hometown, Eranad constituency.

Sharaf Ali started playing football since his school days. He played for the Calicut University team and started his professional career with the Kerala Police Football Club. He started his career playing as a wing-back and was later shifted to the center of defence. Sharaf Ali also played as a midfielder during his career. His defensive awareness, tackling ability, positional awareness and stamina made him an indispensable player.

Kerala Police Football Club
Sharaf Ali’s career is closely associated with Kerala Police Football Club, where he played for a significant period of time during his professional career. He played for Kerala Police for almost 12 years and was a key player who helped its development as one of the dominant forces in the domestic league. Sharaf Ali, IM Vijayan, Joe Paul Ancheri and CV Pappachan were all crucial to the dominance of the Kerala Police club in the late 80s and early 90s. His tenure with the club was very good and he remained associated with the club even after announcing his retirement from professional football.
mohun bagan
He was approached by Mohun Bagan officials during the 1991 Santosh Trophy tournament. Sharaf Ali, who was reluctant to leave Kerala, demanded attractive salaries and hoped that the authorities would not sign him. He was signed by the club the following day for an undisclosed fee. He left Kerala Police Club to join Mohun Bagan in the 1991–1992 season and played one season with the Kolkata club. His first season with Mohun Bagan was so successful that they won six titles, including the Federation Cup (1991) against arch-rivals East Bengal. After the end of the season he left the club and rejoined Kerala Police Club.

Sharaf Ali made his international debut on 20 January 1986 against Korea Republic in the Nehru Cup in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He was a part of the Indian national football team during 1985–1995, playing more than 50 matches for his country. He captained the Indian national team on a few occasions. His stellar performances for the Kerala Police team and the Kerala state team earned him the opportunity to represent his country at the international level. His international career spanned more than a decade and made him one of the best players to play for the Indian national football team.

He finished his professional career as a player with Kerala Police Football Club. He then joined him as his manager and trained him during his tenure in Kerala Police. In 2022, they announced their dream project, Novus Soccer Academy, a mega-funded project to be executed in different phases. Academy chief coordinator Sharaf Ali reunited with many of his former colleagues, including IM Vijayan, who held various positions at the academy.

Sharaf Ali retired from his Kerala Police job on 30 May 2020 along with KT Chacko and M Baburajan, with whom he played together in the Kerala Police club and the Indian national team. IM Vijayan described the retirement of these three officers from Kerala Police as the end of an era.
