World Press Freedom Day 2023: UNESCO and New York will host the annual World Press Freedom Day Global Conference from 2 to 5 May 2023. The conference will focus on the impact of digital era for freedom of expression, access to information and privacy, safety of journalists, etc. Some specific recommendations will also be made to address these challenges.
The day will once again bring together stakeholders, including policymakers, journalists, media representatives, activists, cybersecurity managers, and legal experts, to uncover the this issue and develop specific solutions to address the threats posed by increased scrutiny of press freedom and privacy.
World Press Freedom Day is also known as World Press Day. The day also honors journalists who lost their lives. It was announced by the United Nations General Assembly on 3 May to spread awareness of the importance of press freedom in its operation, information provided and importance, and to evaluate government’s obligation to uphold and respect the right to freedom of expression. .

World Press Freedom Day 2023: Theme
The theme for World Press Freedom Day 2023 is “Shaping the future of rights: freedom of expression is the engine of all other human rights.” This day will serve as a reminder to realize all other human rights that depend on freedom of the press as well as independent, pluralistic and diverse media.
The theme of World Press Freedom Day 2022 is “Journalism under digital siege”.
The theme of World Press Freedom Day 2021 is “Information as a Public Good”. The theme focuses on the importance of cultivating information as a public good and explores ways to strengthen journalism.
The day highlights three main themes:
– Ways to ensure the economic sustainability of the mass media. – Mechanism to ensure the transparency of Internet companies. – Strengthening media literacy (MIL) capacity to help people recognize and treat journalism as an important part of information as a public good.
The theme of World Press Freedom Day 2020 is “Journalism without fear or favor”. UNESCO has launched a global media and social media campaign focusing on journalism without fear or bias. From 4 to 6 May 2020, various events will be held, including High Level Dialogue on Media Freedom and Combating Misinformation in the Context of COVID-19, webinar and discuss online via Facebook Live, Youtube and Microsoft Teams, among other digital platforms.
