The birth of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
The beginnings of WIPO date back to 1883 in the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, when 14 countries signed the Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, hence, from that convention, the protection of intellectual property patents, trademarks and industrial designs have been created.
WIPO was formally established under the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization, which entered into force on April 26, 1970. Under this Convention, WIPO seeks to “promote the protection of intellectual property rights. all around the world.” It became a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1974.
Purpose of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
• Promote the protection of intellectual property worldwide through cooperation between countries and cooperation with any other international organization. • Ensure administrative cooperation between trade unions.
Governing bodies of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
It has four organs discussed below:
• General Assembly: Consists of all countries that are parties to the WIPO Convention and are members of any association. It meets every two years and has the highest authority of all.
• Conferences: Consists of all States party to the WIPO Convention, regardless of whether they are members of one or more associations. It meets every two years to discuss issues of general interest in the field of intellectual property, as well as to establish WIPO’s technical legal assistance program and budget for that program.
• Coordinating Committee: Consists of States Parties to this Convention that are members of the Executive Committee of the Paris Union, or the Executive Committee of the Berne Union, or both. However, if any Executive Committee consists of more than one-quarter of the Member States of the Assembly that elected it, the Executive Committee shall designate from among its members the member states. member of the Coordination Committee. , in such a way that their number does not exceed the above-mentioned quarter, it is understood that the country in which the territory of which the Organization is located shall not be included in the calculation of the said quarter.
Contribution of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
WIPO has played an important role in helping countries establish effective intellectual property regimes in all three areas of patents, copyrights and trademarks. As countries make the transition from a state-owned economy to a market-driven one, they recognize the need for a functional IP infrastructure. Thus, these countries see the advantages of joining the World Trade Organization; is seeking WIPO’s assistance in bringing their intellectual property regimes to the required standards.
Patents: WIPO’s most recent efforts in the field of patents focus on the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs), negotiated at the Uruguay Round. of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Although the agreement was negotiated outside of WIPO, the officials involved initially expected that WIPO, with its unique institutional strength and expertise, would play a key role in implementing the agreement. And indeed it has become so. Through a separate memorandum of understanding between WIPO and the World Trade Organization (the forerunner of GATT), WIPO undertakes a number of activities in support of the agreements reached on TRIPs.

190 UN member states, the Cook Islands, the Holy See and Niue are among the 193 current members of WIPO, while Palestine has permanent observer status. The Federated States of Micronesia, Palau and South Sudan are the only countries that are not members of the United Nations-recognized countries.
WIPO activities include organizing forums to discuss and shape international intellectual property rules and policies, providing services at a global level for the registration and protection of intellectual property. in different countries, resolves cross-border intellectual property disputes, helps connect intellectual property systems through unified standards and infrastructure, and acts as a database common reference on all intellectual property matters, including providing reports and statistics on the state of intellectual property protection or innovation globally and in specific countries.
