Depending on the country and region, the prevalence of hypertension varies. The WHO Region of the Americas has the lowest prevalence of hypertension (18%) and the WHO Africa Region has the highest rate of hypertension (27%).
Adults with hypertension increased from 594 million in 1975 to 1.13 billion in 2015, with low- and middle-income countries having the highest increase. This increase was mainly due to an increase in risk factors for hypertension in these groups.

India’s Hypertension Control Initiative
The World Health Organization estimates that noncommunicable diseases account for about 63% of all deaths in India, with cardiovascular disease accounting for 27% of these deaths and affecting 45% of adults in India. age 40–69. One of the most important risk factors for CVD is high blood pressure. Furthermore, it remains poorly controlled due to limited knowledge of hypertension, inadequate primary care, and poor follow-up.
By 2025, India wants to reduce the relative prevalence of hypertension (high blood pressure) to 25%. The Government of India has established the Hypertension Control India Initiative (IHCI) to accelerate treatment services for the country’s 220 million hypertensive citizens.
In India, only 12% of hypertensive patients have blood pressure under control. One of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart attack and stroke, is uncontrolled blood pressure, which accounts for a third of all deaths in India.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Medical Research Council of India, the WHO Country Office in India and Determination to Save Lives collaborated to launch IHCI in November 2017.
Some serious illnesses, including kidney and heart problems, can be caused by high blood pressure. World Hypertension Day is therefore an opportunity to raise awareness about the causes, types, symptoms, treatment and other aspects of this condition.
