News about Woody Whitelaw
The North Carolina Senate voted last week to appoint Woody White to the University of North Carolina’s 24-person board of trustees.
From 2018 until his departure in September 2021, the veteran and former New Hanover County Commissioner served on the UNCW Board of Directors. He was appointed by Tim Moore, Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives.
Senator Michael Lee of New Hanover County nominated White for election to the UNC Board of Directors. (R-7). On March 14, the Senate Nominating Committee, chaired by Senator Bill Rabon (R-8) of Brunswick County, began debating six names for the committee: two new names and four new names. name is re-nominated. The next day, the nominees were approved.
According to Senator Gladys Robinson (D-28), a member of the committee, the two new nominees are both white Republicans, who have argued that the Senate should consider more diverse candidates to actually represents the UNC system.
Although women make up the majority of the UNC system, Robinson notes that not many of them are on the board. It also doesn’t have a lot of people of color on it. Five of the 24 voting council members were women and four were black. White argues that the university is suppressing conservative views after leaving UNCW.
After his death, White wrote on Facebook: “When a conservative professor fought for First Amendment equality and won $700,000, he was still ostracized by the unrepentant government and bullied. to the point of suicide.”
It was mentioned that Mike Adams, a conservative professor whose teaching methods and treatment of students were the subject of much controversy. After Adam accepted a $500,000 early retirement package from the university in early 2021, White implied that the university also bears some fault. The agreement with UNCW was reached as pressure to resign increased and threats of a lawsuit became more real. Adams took his own life a week before his planned retirement.
The university’s response to Associate Professor Dan Johnson, who wrote in a May 2021 Facebook post, “Let’s support Republicans,” White countered with this example. After the article was published locally in June, Johnson apologized and the organization asserted that it “acted on the information in a timely and appropriate manner,” according to WECT. White later complained in a letter to Sartarelli about the double standard regarding freedom of speech.
White commented on Facebook: “But when a libertarian professor advocates violence against conservative students, no one says anything.” “Nothing happened,”
White also criticized the university’s response to COVID-19, especially its choice to hold in-person classes digitally. He advised those who took traditional classes that were turned online for a refund.
