During a recent interview, director Paul King explained why he knew Timothee was his only choice in terms of casting.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Paul explained that there was no one else that he could imagine in the role. He was so sure that he didn’t even have Timothee audition.

“It was a straight offer because he’s great and he was the only person in my mind who could do it,” he explained. “But because he’s Timothée Chalamet and his life is so absurd, his high school musical performances are on YouTube and have hundreds of thousands of views. So I knew from stanning for Timmy Chalamet that he could sing and dance really well.”

He continued, saying, “I knew that was in his arsenal, but I didn’t know how good he was. When I spoke to him he was quite keen. He’d done tap dancing in high school and he was like, ‘I’d quite like to show people I can do that.’”

Wonka premieres in theaters on December 15. Press play on the trailer below!

Although Timothee was Paul‘s only choice for the role, four other stars were considered for the part.

You might be surprised to learn that this isn’t Timothee‘s only musical role.
