A California resident has filed a lawsuit against the Walt Disney Company alleging that a Disneyland cast member dressed as Goofy permanently injured her during a ride in 2022.
The lawsuit was filed in Orange County Superior Court in late March 2024 by a woman named Katrina Griffin. She claimed that while visiting Disney’s California Adventure park with her daughter in April 2022, a cast member dressed as Goofy “walked right” toward her.
The impact caused Griffin to fall onto the “hard concrete.” But the incident did not end there. He said the Disneyland cast member ended up falling “all of her body weight” on top of her. The accidental fall caused what she said were “serious, traumatic, debilitating and permanent injuries that required significant medical attention.”
However, the lawsuit did not reveal details about the injuries. Although those named in the lawsuit are Disneyland and the cast member in the Goofy costume, Griffin was unable to identify who the cast member was.
The character’s “handler,” who walks through the park with the cast member in a suit to ensure safety between the cast member and guests, was also named in the lawsuit. Griffin said the guide was unable to prevent the accident. Handler was also not identified in the lawsuit.
The cast member in the Goofy costume is listed as “John Doe 1” and the handler is listed as “John Doe 2” in the lawsuit documents.
Griffin is currently seeking damages for negligence and stated that his injuries from the incident “will result in some permanent disability.” Through the lawsuit, she requested a jury trial to seek damages for medical care bills and lost income due to recovery.
It was further reported that a case management conference was scheduled for September 4.
Disneyland Already Sued by Cast Members Who Allegedly Laughed at Disabled Guest
Disneyland has been the subject of several lawsuits in recent years. In late 2022, a lawsuit was filed against Disneyland over an incident that occurred in 2021 on the park’s Jungle Cruise attraction.
According to the Orange County Register, the lawsuit reveals that while the guest, identified as Joanne Aguilar, was at the theme park with her adult daughters in August 2021, employees told Aguiler that there was no chair-accessible boat. wheels available.
The ride has an ADA accessible boat to allow disabled guests to board without getting out of their wheelchairs. However, Aguiler decided to get on another boat and her daughters helped her.
When the trip came to an end, Aguilar’s daughters helped her off the boat. The Disneyland cast members did not help her. Instead, those working the ride allegedly laughed at her as she struggled to get off the ride.
Aguilar lost his balance on the blocks placed on the stairs. He fell backwards and fractured his right femur. He spent 10 days in a nearby hospital before going to a rehabilitation center.
Unfortunately, Aguilar suffered an infection while at the facility and went into septic shock. He subsequently died in early 2022.
His family sued for wrongful death and violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Those named in the lawsuit are the Walt Disney Company, the theme park division of Disney and Disneyland.
