Despite their less than idealistic past, the first person to be hired as Voight’s intelligence director was none other than Dawson. During his time on the Chicago Police Department’s production of Dick Wolf, Dawson served as Voight’s second-in-command, taking over the team whenever his Sergeant was busy with other things.
Voight and Dawson are completely different, which is why they work so well together as intelligence leaders. If Voight isn’t afraid to cross the line and break the law, if that means serving justice or doing what’s important to him, then Dawson is a rule-abiding man. So when Dawson was effectively removed from the Chicago Police Department season 6, it was a blow to the series’ cast. No clear reason has been given as to why Jon Seda withdrew from the police process, but according to a report from Deadline, the decision stemmed from a feeling that the character was on the right track. Instead of keeping him at the Chicago Police Department without any new ideas, NBC decided to remove him from the series. Seda did not comment directly on the matter, although he said he was grateful to be playing Dawson.
Assuming this was indeed the reason to get rid of Dawson, this would explain the sudden change in personality. In the Chicago Police Department season 6, detective intelligence develops a substance abuse problem after sustaining a shoulder injury. He tried to keep his co-workers unaware, but did his best to maintain his addiction. Despite Voight’s efforts to help, he decided it was best to leave the force, enter rehab, and move to Puerto Rico. Apparently, Seda’s departure is not the same as Sophia Bush’s departure chicago police department exit. The decision to introduce this drastic change is said to be the reason why Dawson no longer resonates as a character. If CPD keeps his original personality, he will continue to be an interesting addition to the intelligence community, especially compared to Voight.
For many years, Dawson has chicago police department. Since his departure, no one has clearly taken on that position, as everyone seems willing to go Voight’s way because his intentions are good for the most part. Thankfully, based on Seda’s writing of the character, there’s always a way to bring him back, either as a cameo or as a regular movie.
