The Video Vanguard Award is the most prestigious honor a musician can take home at the MTV Video Music Awards.
It is an honor given to everyone from Michael and Janet Jackson to Britney Spears, Madonna, Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé, recognizing artists who have consistently delivered innovative, cutting-edge imagery.
This year’s winner is Shakira, who fits right in with the revolutionary icons who have already taken home the Moon Person. She really is a deserving winner, but we’re already thinking about who she should receive the Video Vanguard Award next year at the 2024 MTV VMAs.

Our list contains some acts that you might be genuinely surprised to learn haven’t received the award yet. Did you know that legends like Paul Abdul, Shania Twain and the Spice Girls have yet to take home the win?
Moving forward in pop history, artists like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry are famous for their visual storytelling and blockbusters, but they also haven’t been awarded yet.
Other artists, like BTS and Bad Bunny, are relatively newer to the scene but have still managed to leave a lasting impact.
There are so many viable options and we know we may have overlooked someone. Vote for whoever you think deserves the win and feel free to write a favorite if he’s not represented.
