The couple raised two children, Meagan and Colin. Meagan’s revelation that she battled anorexia for six years landed her in the national spotlight. She and John wrote an op-ed on CNN detailing, among other things, how her parents helped her overcome mental illness.
Meagan stated that her anorexia problems began after a friend called her fat. Although she ate healthy foods and exercised frequently, Meagan couldn’t help but think that people saw her as fat, she wrote. John said that he noticed a difference in Meagan but ignored it and attributed her changes to adolescence. However, Donna noticed that Meagan had a serious problem.
“I had not cheated on her [Donna]Megan wrote. “’No mom,’ I told her, ‘I’m fine.’ She begged me to tell her what was going on. I finally dropped the ‘fat’ insult that had hurt me so much, the one I couldn’t get out of my head. And then we speak. It felt so good to talk.”
That conversation started Meagan’s journey to recovery. “Medications against depression. Art therapy. music therapy. Group sessions. Individual sessions. Sessions just with Donna and me. Sessions without Donna. We tried everything, and although not everything made a difference, I think we worked hard to find a way to get ahead, ”John summed up about the recovery of his daughter.
