Gloria Rachel Bloom, the daughter of a Jewish working-class family, was born on July 3, 1941. She was taken to her father, Morris, a salesman, and mother, Stella, a housewife, in Philadelphia. She graduated from a high school for girls in Philadelphia. She then attended the University of Pennsylvania for a degree, where she met her first husband. She was married to lawyer Peyton Bray, with whom she had a daughter, Lisa Bloom. They divorced shortly after their daughter was born on September 20, 1961.
After the divorce, Gloria returned to her parents and continued her education. Her thesis on black writers earned her a bachelor’s degree in English with honors in 1963. She completed her master’s degree in 1966 and moved to Los Angeles, California, where she lived in Watts.
