Alaya High (stage name: That Girl Lay Lay) is a 13-year-old Houston native who rose to fame by becoming the youngest female rapper ever signed to a record label. In 2018, Empire offered Alaya a recording contract, which many people thought she deserved.
Alaya became popular by posting rap videos on social media. Her freestyle prowess impressed people all over the world, and thanks to constant pressure from fans, she earned a spot on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Still riding high on her dazzling performance as Ellen, Alaya released her first album, the cheat code. In 2019, he released The Reloaded Cheat Codewith hits like Supersize XL and Mother.
This piece will look at Alaya’s parents and her rapidly rising career.
Lay Lay started rapping after watching his father Acie High make music in the studio.
Alaya High was born on January 28, 2007 in Houston, Texas. Her father, the rapper Acie High, regularly took her to the studio where she was making music. At the age of 5, Acie began to practice freestyle with her father. Acie revealed in an interview with 97.9 THE BOX who recognized Alaya’s natural talent, but didn’t think she would become a star as quickly as she did. Alaya spoke with Power 105.1 on his start in the music industry:
“I used to always go to the studio with him and he hit me. I was like, ‘Sounds like fun. It seems fun. I want to try it.’ So I tried freestyle when I was younger. As I got older, I started writing my own stuff because it got a little hard for me to do it freely… I started writing my own stuff and I put it on Instagram and it just blew up.”
Ghostwriting is considered controversial in the rap industry because a significant portion of rap fans believe that rappers should create their own music. Alaya has been accused of using ghostwriters, but in an interview in 97.9 THE BOXrevealed that she doesn’t use ghostwriters simply because she can’t be sure if they’re going to write the truth.
“If they write that I’m going to get off the Lamborghini, that’s not true because we all know that I’m going to get off the Mercedes,” he said humorously. Alaya’s mother has taken a backseat when it comes to her daughter’s career, but she is heavily involved in Alaya’s life behind the scenes. She is a fitness guru and makes sure that Alaya stays fit and healthy.
Alaya said fitness is important to her because she wants to perform on stage like Beyonce does. On May 13, 2018, Alaya attached the following caption along with a photo of her mother: “HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!! My mom is kind, my mom, she shines, she’s so worth it and she’s a hard worker, I love you mom.”
Lay Lay isn’t sure if she wants to focus on acting, making music or entrepreneurship.
Most of the people are sure that Lay Lay will become one of the most famous rappers in the world. Despite Alaya’s astonishing musical prowess, there’s no guarantee that he’ll pursue music as a full-time career. The avenues of acting and entrepreneurship have opened up for him since he became an internet sensation.
In June 2020, Alaya signed an overall business agreement with Nickelodeon. The deal involves creating content and promoting consumer products for the company. Nickelodeon also pledged to support her music career. Following the announcement, Alaya stated:
“I am so excited to join the Nickelodeon family! I grew up watching Nick and this opportunity is seriously a dream come true. I have the best fans in the world and I can’t wait to take them on this journey with me.”
Alaya’s business ventures include her lip gloss line, Lyrics Lip Gloss by Lay Lay, and a collaboration with bracelet brand Alex and Ani. She looks a lot like a 13-year-old girl, but it doesn’t weigh her down. Alaya has her sights set on being as successful as possible and is determined to work towards her goals.
Despite her success, Alaya has her feet firmly planted on the ground. She appreciates that she is far from the best when it comes to everything she does. However, she told him 97.9 THE BOX that through practice you have the potential to rise to the top:
“I will say that I have not mastered anything yet, I will say that for an 11-year-old boy I am doing very well, but when I am like 20 and 18 or something like that I can say that I have mastered it. I have been doing it for a long time, but you still need to practice. Right now, I’d say I’m the best at making you laugh, the best at looking cool and dancing.”
