Who are Gradey Dick’s parents? His mother’s battle with cancer.

Gradey Dick has made the transition from high school to college basketball look easy, such is the extent of his talent and temperament. Top talents sometimes struggle to adjust to the faster, more physical game of college basketball, but Gradey has adapted perfectly.

Gradey’s parents have contributed greatly to Gradey’s success.

Gradey’s mother, who played basketball for Iowa State, battled colorectal cancer.

Gradey Dick was born on November 20, 2003 to Carmen and Bart Dick in Wichita, Kansas. He grew up with three older brothers: Kelsey, Brodey, and Riley.

Carmen played basketball for Iowa State; after graduating, he played for a year abroad. Bart played football and baseball at the University of Kansas, but did not pursue a sports career after graduating in 1980.

When Gradey was 7 years old, doctors diagnosed Carmen with colorectal cancer. While Carmen battled the disease, Gradey took on responsibilities at home. Her experience taught Gradey discipline and instilled in him a sense of maturity beyond her years.

“I think that shaped Gradey in different ways to not take things for granted,” Bart said. POP. “I don’t think that escapes him.”

Gradey started playing basketball at a young age. To avoid being bullied on the court by his older brothers, Gradey became an accomplished marksman. “He had to keep up, and he did,” Carmen said. “He couldn’t go in, so he had to learn how to hit long shots.” “To fit in, he had to be creative,” Bart added.

Carmen has helped Gradey become a more complete basketball player. He said jayhawkslant:: “My mom is more of a poster. Over the years I’ve been a shooter, but I have an advantage because my mom teaches me a lot about post moves. If she doesn’t shoot, I can take it to hoops and use what I learned from her.”

Bart admits that Gradey is a lot like his mother. “She’s very focused and I think Gradey brings that out of her,” Bart said. “She takes some things and does them incredibly well, and I think that’s where Gradey nailed it.”

Gradey’s parents say he settled in smoothly at the University of Kansas

Gradey Dick considered several college offers, but seemed destined to end up at the University of Kansas: His father and older brothers had attended the university. However, despite his family’s ties to the institution, it was not an easy decision for Gradey.

“Yeah, so my mom played at Iowa State,” she said. “Iowa State is a team that I followed and I am a fan of the coach [Fred] Hoiberg, so when he went to Nebraska and offered me, that’s another connection I have.”

Gradey chose the University of Kansas and it was a perfect fit. Carmen told him KSNW:: “I would say that he is doing very well. I mean, like I said, it’s been a lifelong dream to play at KU, and he loves the campus. He loves the team. He loves trainers. And of course going to school, but I mean, it’s going great. He is a happy boy. It’s a great place for him.”

“He seems to be happy and seems to be enjoying the team and the coaches,” Bart added. Bart said that he enjoys watching Gradey evolve his game. “I watch plays and think, ‘I’ve never seen that before,’” Bart said. “That’s what he likes because he’s not just a shooter.”

Gradey’s parents attend all the games and receive the attention of the television crews. “It seems like they really like to shoot the parents,” Carmen said. “And I think especially of us who are from around here. You know, we have the KU connection.”
