Richard Simmons disappeared because he didn’t want the public to see him as a sickly old man.
The TMZ documentary claimed that health problems caused Richard Simmons’ disappearance. The doctor claimed that Richard’s operation on his right knee was so painful that he opted not to have surgery on his left knee. He affirms:
“He was in a lot of pain… We still know that, to this day, Richard has yet to have corrective surgery on his left knee. He walks with a cane and that explains a lot. He’s not the same guy anymore.”
“Richard wanted to retire before his image got old again. And his knee problems were a huge factor in his decision.”
Following the documentary’s release, Simmons wrote on Facebook: “Thank you all for your kindness and love. With love, Richard.
Tom Etsey, Richard’s representative, told the New York Post that Richard personally wrote the Facebook message. Etsey said: “Richard is forever grateful for the continued outpouring of love and gratitude he has received from around the world. He is happy, healthy and lives the life that he has chosen to live”.
Richard’s friends were worried that people close to him would take him hostage.
Two years after Richard’s disappearance, daily News published a story stating that Richard’s friends feared holding him hostage. “He was the most trustworthy and caring person on the planet, and then he suddenly disappeared? I have come to believe that something else is going on,” a friend told the publication. “I don’t think Richard is there of his own free will.”
The report stated that in April 2014, Richard told his close friend and former assistant Mauro Oliveira that the pair could no longer be in contact. “I want to be in the house, and we will never see each other again,” Richard allegedly told Mauro. Oliveira reportedly asked Simmons if his housekeeper, Teresa Reveles, controlled her life; “Yes,” Simmons replied.
“I feel like Richard is now being controlled by the people he controlled his whole life,” Mauro said. “Controlled in the sense that they are taking advantage of his weak state of mind. Controlled in the sense that they are controlling his mail, controlling everything. His brother, the manager and Teresa. Those three people.
Mauro said that he visited Richard at his mansion and found him sleeping at 2 in the afternoon on Sunday. “I don’t care,” Teresa reportedly told Mauro when she suggested that Richard seek treatment. By TMZPolice visited Richard’s home in January 2015 and found him alert and responsive.
Other rumors and conspiracy theories surrounding the disappearance of Richard Simmons include: Richard’s knees have given out and he can’t bear to look weak in public; Simmons’ mental health problems, compounded by the death of his beloved Dalmatian, have paralyzed him; and Richard just wants to be left alone.
An email sent to Washington Post by his publicist Tom Estey supports the latter theory. “He is simply living his life voluntarily out of the public eye,” the email reads. Filmmaker and long-time friend of Simmons, Richard Simmons, started the Missing Richard Simmons podcast in an attempt to get Richard back to his usual effervescence. He said Washington Post:
“What we are doing is something of a grand gesture. We are reminding him that what he did was important and that he helped countless people and they love him for it. There’s something about him, maybe, that he doesn’t believe, and I hope this shakes up that part of him.”
