what if… ? is an animated anthology series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including fan-favorite characters such as Peggy Carter, T’Challa, Doctor Strange, Killmonger, and Thor. Directed by Bryan Andrews with AC Bradley as head writer, the new series features the MCU’s signature action, but with a quirky twist. In the play, Observer Uatu is an omnipotent being who observes events in multiple universes from a distance without being able to intervene. However, when an entity peeks through the Veil, things change, endangering the multiverse.

what if…? Season two consists of nine episodes that are mostly unconnected except for Jeffrey Wright’s narration and constant reminders of the Butterfly Effect of the MCU’s multiverse.Their proposals include Nebula joining the Nova Corps; Happy Hogan saving Avengers Tower in a very uncomfortable way stubborn, stubborn Parody; Tony Stark fighting the Master on Sakaar. None of these questions fit into Marvel Comics’ original conceptual “What If…?” release, which feels more organically tied to the actual mainline events. But it’s an issue that has a bigger impact on the plot of season one.
Season 2’s narrative swings feel more established while becoming less concerned with justifying its existence and instead managing to actually raise at least one question set in the MCU’s 616 universe. As such, the episode explores what would happen if Yondu actually handed over Peter Quill to Kurt Russell’s alter ego, which feels more meaningful. What if…? The animation continues to impress (as does the cast)
what if…? Season 2 looks really good: the cell-shaded animation style was already great in Season 1, but arguably feels even more polished here. Character resemblance is also very high in most cases (admittedly, this comes in handy when naming certain characters with less obvious traits). The real benefit of animation, though, is that it allows storytelling teams to capture spectacle and impressive special effects sequences without pushing live-action CG budgets into the hundreds of millions. It also allows for sequences like Sakaar’s death match that would never have been possible in a beautifully hilarious George Miller-esque way in the mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe.
return what if…? The cast – while not entirely complete – also provides a comforting sense of familiarity, escaping some of the more cynical accusations that no animation could be this important. Having so many major actors return to voice their own Marvel movie characters (beyond the likes of Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson) feels like a validation. Most deliver vocal performances that live up to the animation’s high expectations, and both Jeff Goldblum and Taika Waititi are clearly having a great time.
what if…?Season 2 is smarter than you think and has a clear synopsis
While it may still be difficult for the most cynical readers to understand what if…? Season 2’s raison d’être, with a more obvious attempt to balance audience rewards.Episodes offer cleverly observed references to popular movies blade runner, stubborn, stubbornand running man. There will inevitably be a higher level of humor than in most live-action MCU versions, but nothing is shoehorned in due to the medium, and the target audience has a wider feel to it. What’s impressive is that even though existing MCU stories are so close, it feels like anyone can watch this without the arduous homework that MCU lore usually requires.
If you know these stories, you get the added bonus of echoes that exist here, but without that awareness, what if…? Season 2 will still be interesting. But it’s not quite a home run, as there are still some unanswered questions here, somewhat ironically. Why Marvel hasn’t offered more episodes devoted to logical branches of the MCU — such as Bucky taking over as Captain America after “Endgame” — remains a mystery.The infinite possibilities of the multiverse, and more recently by Spider-Verse In the movie, the choice not to use different styles of animation in different stories feels like a missed opportunity.
But all in all, what if…? Season 2 is a good time. It’s fun, has the right balance of emotion and spectacle, and it’s always a welcome diversion to see numerous characters from across the Marvel Universe doing things that would normally be impossible. Last but not least, the best episode is undoubtedly “What If Happy Hogan Saved Christmas,” which is an incredible achievement in itself.
