His father, Ustad Sharafat Ali Khan, was a popular tabla player. His mother’s name is Rajina Khan. His grandfather is Ustad Abdul Latif Khan and maternal grandfather is Padma Shri awardee Ustad Faiyaz Ahmed Khan. His uncle is Niaz Ahmed Khan who was awarded the Tansen Award.
His elder brother Sajid Khan is also a music director.

Sajid–Wajid debuted as music directors with the Bollywood song, “Teri Jawani” from the film Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998); Starring Salman Khan and Kajol. The duo came into limelight with Sonu Nigam’s music album “Deewana” (1999), in which they composed the music for the songs “Deewana Tera,” “Ab Mujhe Raat Din,” and “Is Kadar Pyar Hai.”
Sajid-Wajid composed music for some of the albums like ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’ (2001) and ‘Tera Intezaar’ (2005). Wajid and his brother Sajid composed music for many films, including ‘Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai’ (2002), ‘Gunaah’ (2002), ‘Chori Chori’ (2003), ‘The Killer’ (2006), ‘Shaadi ‘Stuck by doing’. ‘Gaya Yaar’ (2006), ‘Jaane Hoga Kya’ (2006), and ‘Freaky Ali’ (2016).
He was also a singer and has sung for various songs in Bollywood films like ‘Wanted’ (2009), ‘Dabangg’ (2010), ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ (2012), ‘Grand Masti’ (2013), and ‘Satyamev’. Gave his voice. ‘Jayate’ (2018). Sajid-Wajid were one of the favorite music directors of ‘Bollywood’s brothers’ Salman Khan. Sajid-Wajid composed music for many of Salman Khan’s films, including ‘Tumko Na Bhool Payenge’ (2002), ‘Tere Naam’ (2003), ‘Garv’ (2004), ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ (2004), ‘Partner’ (2007), ‘Hello’ (2008), ‘God Tussi Great Ho’ (2008), ‘Wanted’ (2009), ‘Main Aur Mrs. Khanna’ (2009), ‘Veer’ (2010), ‘Dabangg’ ‘ (2010), ‘Dabangg 2’ (2012), and ‘Dabangg 3’ (2019). Sajid-Wajid worked as lyricists for many Bollywood songs like ‘Jee Le’ (Aag, 2007), ‘Le Le Maja Le’ (Wanted, 2009) and ‘Fevicol Se’ (Dabangg 2, 2012). Sajid-Wajid composed background scores for Hindi films including ‘Welcome’ (2007), ‘Bullet Raja’ (2013), and ‘Daddy’ (2017). Sajid and Wajid appeared as mentors in the singing TV reality shows ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar’ (2010) and ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ (2012).
Wajid sang the IPL 4 theme song “Dhoom Dhoom Dhoom Dhadaka” in 2011.
The duo composed tracks for TV shows like ‘Dus Ka Dum’ (2008), ‘Bigg Boss 4’ (2010), and ‘Bigg Boss 6’ (2012). During the Corona lockdown in 2020, Sajid-Wajid composed Salman Khan’s lockdown songs ‘Bhai Bhai’ and ‘Pyaar Karona’. “Bhai Bhai” is the last song composed by Wajid Khan.
Death
Wajid Khan left this world on 1 June 2020 (Monday). A few days before his death, he was admitted to Surana Hospital in Chembur, Mumbai. In an interview, famous Indian musician Salim Merchant said,
He had many issues. He had kidney problems and had undergone a transplant some time ago. But recently he was diagnosed with kidney infection… He was on ventilator for the last four days after his condition deteriorated. “It was the beginning of kidney infection and then his condition became critical.”
Earlier, he had undergone a kidney transplant and was suffering from a kidney infection, and later, he was tested positive for COVID-19. He suffered cardiac arrest, due to which he died. Many Bollywood celebrities condoled his demise and tweeted,
Salman Khan tweeted,
Wajid will always love, respect, adore and remember you as a person and your talent, may your beautiful soul rest in peace…”
Amitabh Bachchan wrote on Twitter,
Shocked by the demise of Wajid Khan. A bright smiling talent passes away. Blessings, prayers and condolences.”

His body is buried in the Versova cemetery in Mumbai; Next to the grave of late Irrfan Khan, who left this world on 29 April 2020 after fighting a long battle with cancer. His funeral was attended by a few people including Aditya Pancholi, Sajid Khan and Wajid Khan’s wife and children.

When you make a song like Mera Hi Jalwa, you can’t even think of any other hero today who can create a stir on the big screen with ease.”
- Interestingly, Wajid’s first and last song as a music director was with Bollywood actor Salman Khan.
- A day after Wajid’s death, his mother also tested positive for COVID-19.
