Vivek Mehra was born in 1961 (age 63 years; as of 2024) in Delhi. He did his schooling from Lawrence School, Sanawar, Himachal Pradesh. He did B.Com from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University. After this he studied CA from The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

On July 15, 2008, he married Indian actress Neena Gupta. They met for the first time on a flight to Mumbai and instantly connected. At that time Vivek had separated from his first wife. After dating for a few years, the couple got married in a private ceremony in the US. By the time he met Neena Gupta, he was divorced and had two children from his first marriage.

After marriage, Neena stayed in Mumbai while Vivek stayed in Delhi. Indian fashion designer Masaba Gupta is the stepdaughter of Neena Gupta and Neena’s former boyfriend Vivian Richards.

From January 1990 to January 1997, he worked as Managing Partner at PR Mehra & Company, Delhi. In January 1997, he became a partner at the private firm PricewaterhouseCoopers International Limited (PwC). While he was working there, he led the M&A tax practice. He was also selected as a member of the PwC Governing Board and India’s Tax Leadership Team. He worked there till March 2016. In May 2017, he was appointed as an independent director at Jubilant Life Sciences Limited. As an Independent Director, he works in various companies like Embassy Office Parks Management Services Pvt. Ltd., DLF Ltd., HT Media Ltd. Hero Future Energy Pvt. Ltd., and Chambal Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd. In 2017, he became non-executive chairman at Religare Health Trust. He is also the founder of private firm Mindshare. He has been appointed as director in around 17 firms including Vivek Mehra LLP, Havells India Ltd, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, DLF Assets Ltd, House of Masaba Lifestyle Pvt Ltd, Bharat Hotels Ltd and Coopers & Lybrand (India) Pvt Ltd .
