Vishnu Saravanan was born on Wednesday, 24 February 1999 (age 24 years; as of 2023) in Kannamangalam, district Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. His zodiac sign is Pisces. He completed his schooling from Army School, Mumbai and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Mumbai. In 2011, Vishnu Saravanan competed in the Optimist Coastal National Championship and achieved four finishes in the ten-race series. After giving trials for the National Squad Selection and Ranking Regatta in 2012, he was selected. In 2013, Vishnu participated in the National Inland Optimist Championship in the Optimistic category. In 2016, he participated in the YAI Youth Nationals in which he won first place. In 2017, he participated in the YAI National Championship and won first place, followed by participating in the 2018 YAI Senior National Championship and won first place.

In 2012, he competed in the LIRP Regatta in Optimist in which he placed third internationally. In 2014, Vishnu took part in the India International Regatta, where he achieved first place. In 2019, he placed third at the ILCA Laser Under-21 World Championships. Vishnu qualified for Tokyo Olympics 2020 on merit in Laser STD class. He finished 23rd and 22nd in the fifth and sixth races respectively and secured Tokyo Olympic quota.

In 2021, he participated in the Musanah Open Championship in which Vishnu placed second in Laser Standard. In the same year, Vishnu finished 25th in the ILCA 7 World Championship held in Barcelona, Spain.

In 2022 he competed in the Trofeo Princess Sofia Regatta held in Spain and finished 25th.

- When Vishnu was just four years old, his family moved to Mumbai. At the age of six, Vishnu Saravanan used to accompany his father to the Army sailing node in Colaba, Mumbai and watch him windsurfing, and that is when he decided to take up the sport as a career. Vishnu’s father bought him an optimistic sailing canoe and started training him in the Arabian Sea when he turned nine.

- He was a javelin thrower in his school and was one year junior to Neeraj Chopra. Vishnu also participated in the National Javelin Competition.
