He did his schooling from Patna Collegiate School, Patna. He then pursued graduation in Law and Psychology from Bihar National College in Patna, Bihar. From 1968 to 1989, he did a Master’s and Fellowship in Dramatic Arts from the National School of Drama, New Delhi. In 1973, he joined the Indian theater group Indian People’s Theater Association, Patna.

His brother Suneet Kumar is a retired Indian Police Service officer of Bihar cadre. As of January 2023, Sunit is serving as the Chairman of Bihar Police Subordinate Service Commission (BPSSC) in Bihar. He has a sister named Ratna Ranjan.

While studying in college, his brother’s friends asked him to accompany them to a theater play of Satish Anand Theater Group. From there his interest in theater plays started developing. After this he performed in various stage plays and street plays.
