Vijay Rawat was born and brought up in Pauri city of Uttarakhand, India. Vijay Rawat’s family has been serving the Indian Army for three generations. His father was a former Lieutenant-General of the Indian Army Staff, who retired in 1988, and in 1951, his father was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles. Vijay Rawat’s maternal grandfather was Kishan Singh Parmar who was a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Uttarkashi.

Vijay Rawat started his political career in 2022 after his retirement from the Indian Army. He joined Bharatiya Janata Party on 19 January 2022. Before joining BJP he attended a meeting with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and he said in a media conference that the views of his late brother Bipin Rawat match his views.   • In December 2021, Vijay Rawat’s elder brother Bipin Rawat and his wife Madhulika Rawat, along with 10 other Indian Army personnel, were killed in a helicopter crash that occurred due to poor weather conditions in Tamil Nadu, India.
