US Department of Justice Charged An Iranian Man Plotting John Bolton’s Assassination

The Department of Justice announced on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, that a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has been charged with complicity in a malicious plot against the life of John Bolton. Bolton, Trump’s national security adviser, took to social media to applaud the Justice Department for taking swift action against Shahram Poursafi. According to an affidavit supporting the criminal complaint against Shahram Poursafi, aka ‘Mehdi Rezay’, he violated several federal criminal laws:

“This affidavit is sent in support of a criminal complaint alleging that SHAHRAM POURSAFI, a.k.a. “Mehdi Rezayi” (“POURSAFI”) violated the following federal criminal laws: (l) I8 USC 195 8(a) (Using interstate commercial facilities to commit murder for hire), and (2) 18 USC

The indictment links Poursafi’s plot against John Bolton with the assassination of Qasem Soleimani, the former commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – the Qods Force, in January 2020. The previous leader was killed in a US air strike. According to the criminal complaint, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi publicly threatened Trump and other top officials with retaliation if they refused to appear in court.

“On or about January 3, 2022, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi gave a public address in which he asserted that former President Trump and other former senior officials in the Trump administration were responsible for the airstrike on Qassem Soleimani. Raisi threatened that if the perpetrators are not brought to justice, “the fist of revenge will come from the sleeve of the Muslim Ummah”.

Poursafi remains outside the country’s borders and is wanted by the FBI.

Who exactly is Shahram Poursafi? An Iranian citizen wanted for conspiring against John Bolton.

The assassination of Qasem Soleimani in a US air strike in January 2020 prompted numerous promises of revenge from both the president of Iran and the current commander of the IRGC-QF. According to the criminal complaint filed against Shahram Poursafi, Esmail Ghani, commander of the IRGC-QF, publicly stated that:

“We will lay the groundwork for strong retaliation against the United States from within their homes because we don’t have to be everywhere as custodians; Whenever necessary, we are retaliating against the Americans with the support of their allies and in their homes without our presence.”

Poursafi, a 45-year-old Iranian with no history of visiting the United States, is accused of trying to pay $300,000 to someone in the United States to assassinate John Bolton. The affidavit contains additional details about fraud:

“Beginning at least approximately October 2021 and continuing through at least or approximately April 2022, POURSAFI used and caused others to use interstate commerce facilities and induce others to travel interstate commerce to plan and carry out the assassination of former National Security Adviser John Bolton.”
