Upendra Limaye is an Indian actor best known for playing the role of Tayappa in the Marathi film Jogva (2009). Starting in 1994, he has been in the film industry for over two decades, having acted in 25 films in Marathi, Hindi and Tamil cinema.

Upendra Limaye was born on Saturday, 8 November 1969 (age 54 years; as in 2023) in Sadashiv Peth, Pune. Their zodiac sign is Scorpio. He studied at New English High School, Tilak Road, Pune and Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Pune. Later, she did an acting course from Lalit Kala Kendra, Center for Performing Arts, New Delhi. He was the first member of the family to pursue a career as a stage, television and screen actor. Growing up, he experienced a mix of traditional values and a more open-minded outlook. His father’s family followed traditional customs, while his mother’s family practiced openness and liberalism. They found co-curricular activities more attractive than academic activities. As a child, he dreamed of becoming a cricketer, but his parents preferred him to play Kabaddi instead. Eventually, he realized that his family’s financial condition was the real obstacle. His passion for theater began with school social gathering plays. After finishing 12th grade, he told his parents about his desire to join the Center for Fine Arts and pursue acting. He took up acting as his primary profession at the Lalit Kala Kendra in Pune. He started working at Alurkar Music House in Pune to earn money. After completing his time at the Lalit Kala Kendra, he along with his friends Sanjay Pawar, Subodh Pandey and Abhay Godse founded an experimental theater platform called ‘Parichay’.

livelihood
Since 1990, he has been engaged in several plays at Grips Theater for five years. In an interview he told that this experience was very beneficial. In these plays, actors over 30 years of age played the roles of 8 or 9 year old children, which was a challenging task. This process aided in the development of both mental and physical flexibility. Additionally, this contributed to the demanding roles he played. In 1999, after a decade of experience with the group ‘Parichaya’, he came to Mumbai to act in a mainstream commercial drama titled ‘Doctor Aap Bhi’. During this period, he met Sachin Khedekar, who was actively participating in various TV serials. This meeting with Sachin Khedekar resulted in a positive change which paved the way for him to move forward in his career. In the early 2000s, he also discovered Marathi television. Even though he got offers from Hindi shows, they were not in line with the dream he wanted to fulfill. He worked closely with Vinay Apte and later through Vinay Apte’s connections, he got his first break in Bollywood with Madhur Bhandarkar in 2002. This was a small role in the film ‘Chandni Bar’. Meanwhile, he continued to work in TV serials, playing small roles. However, the turning point came in 2004 when Madhur Bhandarkar offered him the important role of Inspector Bhosle in a film. During his appearance as a guest on The Kapil Sharma Show in 2019, he mentioned that the 2001 Hindi film Chandni Bar was his first commercially successful film.

He appeared in various Marathi films including Contractor/Decorator in Sarkarnama (1998), Karamchand in Blind Game (2006), Mahadev in Urus (2008), Tuhya Dharma Koncha. (2013) as Kavadu, and Jaggu Ani as Juliet (2023). In 2023, he played the role of Freddy in the Bollywood film “Animal”, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna and Trupti Dimri.

Upendra made his television debut as Sachin Mane in the show Tara From Satara (2019-2020) on Sony TV. In 2022, he appeared in the Marathi TV series ‘Mee Punha Yein’ and in 2023, he became a part of the show ‘Gemadpanthi’. He played the role of Sandeep Shinde in the TV series “Criminal Justice: Adhura Sach” on Disney Hotstar.

- In 2020, she played the role of a Kathak teacher in the TV show ‘Tara From Satara’. Talking about his role in an interview, he said,
I like characters that challenge me as an actor. I believe that as an actor there are two aspects to a role, the external value, which is the costume and the look, these are taken care of by the creative department. Then there’s the inner personality, that’s what I enjoy the most. I like to experiment with the character, getting the body language right. I try to bring as much authenticity as possible. There are Kathak experts present on the set for me so that I can present the layers properly.
