Upendra Kushwaha is an Indian politician and former Minister of State for Human Resources and Development (2014–2018). He is also a former Member of Parliament. In 2010 he became a member of Bihar Legislative Council. On March 3, 2013, he formed his own party ‘Rashtriya Lok Samta Party’.

Upendra Singh was born on Saturday, 6 February 1960 (age 63 years; as in 2023) in Vaishali, Bihar, India. Their zodiac sign is Aquarius. State Legislative Council
In 1985, he joined the youth wing of the Lok Dal and was appointed as the state general secretary of the Yuva Lok Dal from 1985 to 1988. In 1988, he served as the National General Secretary of Yuva Janata Dal till 1993. From 1994 to 1988 in 2002, he worked as the General Secretary of the Samata Party, a branch of the Janata Dal.
In 2021, Kushwaha was nominated to the Legislative Council by Bihar Governor Fagu Chauhan along with 12 others.
State Legislative Assembly
In 2000, he contested and won the assembly elections from Jandaha assembly constituency on Janata Dal (United) ticket. In 2007, he was dismissed from the Janata Dal (United) for allegedly being involved in “anti-party” activities. In February 2009, he founded his own party, Rashtriya Samata Party. In November 2009, Rashtriya Samata Party merged with Janata Dal (United) with the reconciliation of relations between Upendra Kushwaha and Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar. In 2020, Kushwaha announced the formation of a third front in partnership with the Bahujan Samaj Party ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, pitting all 243 against three other political fronts namely the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the Congress-led Contested seats. the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), and another coalition consisting of various smaller parties led by the Jan Adhikar Party.
Ahead of the 2020 Bihar Legislative Assembly election, the RLSP again merged with JD(U), following which Kushwaha was appointed as the Chairman of the National Parliamentary Board of JD(U) in 2021.

In 2010, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha and served on the Standing Committee on Agriculture from August 2010 to January 2013. In 2013, he resigned from Janata Dal (United). On 3 March 2013, he launched another party and named it Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP).
At the time of formation of the RLSP, Kushwaha announced that the party would attempt to overthrow the National Democratic Alliance in Bihar; However, Janata Dal (United) left this alliance and RLSP joined the National Democratic Alliance. In 2014, he contested and won the 16th Lok Sabha election from Karakat constituency on Bharatiya Janata Party ticket. On 26 May 2014, Upendra Kushwaha was sworn in as Minister of State at a swearing-in ceremony held in the presence of the then President of India Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
He was then appointed as Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Resource Development and later, he served in the Ministry of Rural Development; Under the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. In December 2018, he resigned from the ministry and left the National Democratic Alliance. In 2019, RLSP separated from the NDA alliance. Kushwaha joined the Indian National Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Front, which included the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Hindustani Awam Morcha and the Vikassheel Insaan Party. In 2019, he contested the 17th Lok Sabha elections from both Karakat and Ujiarpur constituencies on the Indian National Congress ticket. In Karakat Lok Sabha constituency, Upendra lost to Mahabali Singh of Janata Dal (United) by 84,542 votes and in Ujiarpur Lok Sabha constituency he lost to Bharatiya Janata Party’s Nityanand Rai by 2,77,278 votes.

War of words with Nitish Kumar
In January 2023, Upendra Kushwaha accused Nitish Kumar of making derogatory remarks against him when he was appointed as the Chairman of the JD(U) Parliamentary Board and accused him of ignoring his advice while holding the said post. When the war of words between Upendra and Nitish was making headlines in the newspapers, some protesters pelted stones at Upendra Kushwaha’s car. Reportedly, on January 30, 2023, when Kushwaha reached Arrah from Buxar in Bihar, some people were standing near Upendra Kushwaha’s car carrying black flags. During this, there was a disturbance between the protesters and Upendra’s supporters, in which the protesters pelted stones at Kushwaha’s car. After this, the workers of Kushwaha community beat up the protestors. After this he took it to his social media and tweeted,
Some anti-social elements attacked my vehicle in Nayka Tola, Jagdishpur (Bhojpur). When the security personnel tried to chase them, they ran away.

Talking about this incident in an interview, Kushwaha said,
Some of the stone pelters had their faces covered with mufflers, while others had their faces uncovered. I will tell everything about these people at the appropriate time.”
Subsequently, on 31 January 2023, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced his deputy and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav as his successor for the 2025 state elections, which urged Kushwaha to go against Nitish Kumar. In an interview on January 31, 2023, Upendra, who was at loggerheads with Nitish Kumar, got angry at him and said,
I was given a lot of honor when I was made the Chairman of the Parliamentary Board. But it was a tingle. Despite being the Chairman of the Parliamentary Board, I cannot nominate any member. No attention was paid to my suggestions.”

After the defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kushwaha had given a controversial statement in which he had warned the NDA leadership that there would be blood on the streets if the election results were poor; However, after receiving notice from the Election Commission, he clarified that his intention was not to incite violence.

Facts/General Knowledge
- During his undergraduate days, Upendra learned his political skills from Upendra’s father’s dear friends, Jaiprakash Narayan and Karpoori Thakur. Karpoori Thakur, two-time Chief Minister of Bihar, guided Upendra when he was staying with him at his residence.
- In 1985, when Upendra joined the youth wing of the Lok Dal, he was junior to Janata Dal (United) co-founder Nitish Kumar. Upendra was attracted to Kumar and hence, on his suggestion, he added Kushwaha to his name because, according to Kumar, this name would help in enhancing his political prestige.
