Unused art for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s deleted villain bar scene proves it was a mistake to leave the scene on the cutting room floor.
Summary
- The unused villain designs for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse should have been included in the film to showcase the expert craftsmanship of the animators and character designers.
- Including these cut villains in the third film would make the world of the Spider-Verse movie feel more lived in and build a fleshed-out universe, similar to the first two films.
- By including Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s cut villains in Beyond the Spider-Verse, it would continue the vibrant and distinct feel of the universes visited while giving the fantastic designs their time in the spotlight.
An unused villain design for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse proved that the film’s cut villain scenes should have been left as part of the film. Initially, the first act of the Into the Spider-Verse sequel included a scene where Spot, the film’s villain, entered Marvel Comics’ The Bar With No Name. A safe haven for villains looking to relax between terrorizing New York City, Spot would have been bullied out of the bar by other Spider-Man villains before returning in Across the Spider-Verse‘s cut post-credit scene to exact his revenge with his newfound powers.
A post from the hombreoctubre Twitter account belonging to Sony Animation character designer Jesus Alonso Iglesias reveals initial designs from one of Spider-Man’s most iconic villains: Hammerhead.
Hammerhead was initially set to be part of Across the Spider-Verse‘s cut post-credits scene as evidenced by the fantastic design from Iglesias. Not only does the great design fit the style of the Spider-Verse movies, but it proves the cut scene should have been left in to better tie into Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Why Spider-Verse 3 Needs To Include Across The Spider-Verse’s Cut Villain Designs
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse needs to include these cut villain designs simply due to their expert craftsmanship. It would be a shame for several talented animators and character designers to create such fantastic designs for Spider-Man villains only for the second film to have cut them out. In including Across the Spider-Verse‘s cut villains, this mistake would be rectified and allow the brilliant art made by the hard-working creatives of the production to be seen on the big screen.
Furthermore, it would simply make the world of the Spider-Verse movies feel more lived in. By including a bunch of Spider-Man villains in the third film, it could emulate the first two by building a fleshed-out world. Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse‘s Easter eggs allowed both to feel incredibly vivid and vibrant in terms of the universes visited feeling real and distinct. In including Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘s cut villains in Beyond the Spider-Verse, not only would this continue but fantastic designs as shown above could finally get their time in the spotlight.
