The only child of her parents, Uma comes from a family of artists. His father, KG Subramanian, who died in 2016, was a renowned painter, poet and teacher who was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards.

Soon after completing her graduation around 1993, Uma applied for an anchor position at SUN TV, a Tamil entertainment channel. When he initially started working at SUN TV as a newsreader, the channel was only six months old. Eventually, Padmanabhan started hosting the Tamil morning show ‘Vanakkam Tamizhagam’, which became one of the most watched morning programs in Tamil Nadu and completed 1000 episodes while Uma was there. In an interview, when Uma was asked about her experience in the channel, she said,
News reading and computing are unique across all genres. This happened in the initial days after the Doordarshan era when the private channel Sun TV came to the fore. I joined the channel only six months after its launch. Now you cannot read the news by seeing the sample prompt. You have to read and write and look at the camera. There are a lot of challenges in computing too.”
During her tenure at SUN TV, Uma hosted almost every show on the channel. Apart from this, the TV presenter has also worked with Vijay TV, Jaya TV and other Tamil channels.

Active in the Tamil industry since the early 1990s, Uma Padmanabhan first appeared on the Kollywood silver screen in 1998 with the film ‘Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen’; However, after her big break in the industry, Uma struggled to find work for almost four years.
Simultaneously, Uma started trying out for the Tamil television industry, getting her break as an actress in 2000 in the show ‘Micro Thodar-Oru Kudumbam Oru Ragasiyam’ which aired on Raj TV.

Uma revealed in an interview that she took such a long break because she was not ready for long-running TV serials. Uma further said,
I have been thinking of doing a television project for a long time. This was the time when I got a call for this serial. Also, the channel and the production house are big names – so it’s a win-win for me.

Uma has not limited herself to acting only in films and serials, but she has also worked in a few TV commercials, and she dubs her lines in Hindi and other languages. The successful actress also surprised her fans by showcasing her singing talent in some Tamil songs. In January 2021, Uma became part of a video for the Tamil devotional poem, Margazhi Thingal, where she was shown singing along with other actresses.
The Tamilian socialite also started a television academy midway through her career. When asked about this, Uma said in an interview,
It all started with James Spring. One-page TV channels needed new newsreaders and TV presenters. On the other hand, I saw a lot of people who were interested in using that requirement in places where they were going to speak at colleges. To fill this gap, we started that academy. It worked well for a while.”
In 2013, Padmanabhan became the face of an organization in Chennai that helps create awareness about breast cancer. She became the “Pink Ambassador” for “India Turns Pink”.

- Her father was forced to move to the United States after receiving a Rockefeller Foundation grant, following which Uma spent a year of schooling in New York. When asked about her experience, Uma recalled that it was here that she realized that her father was an artist. He added,
Appa was drawing on egg cartons. She also did acrylic painting, tapestry work and fiber weaving. I was seeing this for the first time.”
- When Uma’s mother passed away in 2005, she took on the role of caregiver to her father, who was ill and lived in Baroda (now Vadodara). According to a report, the actress will spend two weeks with her husband Padmanabhan and the rest will stay in Baroda to take care of her father.
