His cousin left the party to form his own party called Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. After the death of his father Bal Thackeray in 2012, he led the political party. Furthermore, he was also elected president of Shiv Sena in 2013.
Likewise, under his leadership, Shiv Sena joined the NDA government in Maharashtra in 2014. After getting directly involved with the political party, he started getting involved with the government as well.
