Moving towards his professional career, Tommy Kirk auditioned with his older brother Joe for a production of “Ah, Wilderness!” by Eugene O’Neill. at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California. Later, he signed on for a “Reader’s Digest” television series in 1955.

His Disney career began quickly in 1956 when he played Joe Hardy in The Mickey Mouse Club series “The Hardy Boys: The Mystery of the Applegate Treasure.” He rose to fame as a teen star after appearing in the Disney movies “Old Yeller” (1957), “The Shaggy Dog” (1959) and “Swiss Family Robinson” (1960).
Disney Studios terminated Kirk’s contract after a woman complained about the young actor’s relationship with her 15-year-old son. He made his way to American International Pictures. Additionally, he appeared in several of her low-budget teen movies, including “Pajama Party” and “How to Stuff a Wild Bikini.”
Aside from his acting career, Kirk was a businessman. He started a carpet cleaning business and went about his business, occasionally appearing at fan conventions.
