Tom Selleck Talks About His ‘Accidental Career’ in Acting Filled with ‘Endless Failures’

Although he has become one of the best-known actors of his time, Tom Selleck admits that his acting career was actually “accidental.”

During a recent interview with PEOPLE, he Blue blood The star stated that he originally went to USC on a basketball scholarship and majored in business administration. He didn’t even consider pursuing acting until he got his first job as a basketball player in a Pepsi commercial.

He was also cast as a bachelor in The dating game. “It’s really the story of an accidental career,” Tom Selleck said of his acting career. “I had never taken an acting class. He had no training or desire.”

Selleck ended up getting roles in The Young and the Restless as well as The Rockford Files before getting his decisive role in Magnum at the age of 35 years. However, the lifelong actor claimed that he never sought stardom and fame.

“People said, ‘Oh, he got the acting bug,’” Tom Selelck continued. “Or ‘I wanted to be a star.’ I have never spoken that way in my life. “I just wanted to get a job and work.”

Admittedly, surprisingly not an avid television watcher, Tom Selleck said he likes to spend his free time reviewing Blue blood scripts with his wife Jillie. “I’m one of the last to see it,” he shared of the scripts. “And I’m a good editor.”

Selleck then noted how incredibly lucky he has been with his career. “I have had a very good life, a very lucky life. I don’t know if it’s what I thought I’d be doing, but it’s with a lot of gratitude.”

Tom Selleck Avoided Personal Life Struggles by Being More Private

Meanwhile, Tom Selleck opened up about how his private lifestyle has helped him over the years. “I don’t have the hooks that a lot of people have,” he explained. “I didn’t rehabilitate myself or have this tragic life.”

However, Selleck noted that it had its ups and downs. “But I’ve been very lucky.”
