During a recent conversation with DWTS pro Cheryl Burke on her Sex, lies and spray tans On the podcast, Tom explained his departure from the show and how he felt at the time.
Tom recalled that while talking about the upcoming season with DWTS executives in 2019, he received a “phone call from the showrunner and another producer” who told him the list of celebrities who would compete.
When he discovered that former White House press secretary Sean Spicer was among the contestants, Tom was upset because he had recommended that executives refrain from choosing any politicians.
“I said, ‘Guys, this is exactly what we said we wouldn’t do.’ Do not go there. “This, you know, is not the right time, to play to our strengths, to be the show that gives people a break from all this nonsense…”
Tom then suggested he “take the season off” and the showrunner and producer responded with an offer to get out of his contract.
“That’s how strongly they felt,” Tom explained, adding that the counteroffer “really pissed me off.”
When he wrote a statement in response to Sean’s casting to “let people know I was lied to,” Tom realized he was leaving the show.
“I knew at that moment that this would probably be my last season, because of that betrayal,” he said. “Up until that point, there were people of character there.”
The former presenter also described his state of mind after his departure.
“They had screwed me. I’m going to fuck them up,” she said. “But I wanted viewers to know that this was a step too far for me. This was a step too far on the cusp of an election year. And again, if he had been a Democrat, same statement.”
