Thushar Vellappally is an Indian politician from Wayanad, Kerala. He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections against Rahul Gandhi. His own party is Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS). He is the son of Vellappally Natesan, an influential leader from Kerala.

Thushar Vellappally was born in the year 1970 (age 49 years; as in 2019). He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. Tushar is a businessman and vice president of “Sri Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam” (SNDP); An organization working for the welfare of the Ezhava community in Kerala. His father, Vellapalli Natesan, is the president of the SNDP and is a highly influential and household name in Kerala. Tushar’s party, Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS), was launched by his father as a political outfit for the SNDP.

Thushar Vellappally belongs to the Ezhava community (OBC). His father, Vellapalli Natesan, is a very famous leader in Kerala; He is the President of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP). His mother, Preeti Natesan, is a director of the SNDP. He has a sister, Vandana Sreekumar, who is an engineer and married.
livelihood
Before entering politics, Thushar Vellappally was a businessman. He had no interest in politics until December 2015, when his father Vellapalli Natesan formed his own party, Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS). It was formed as a political organization of the SNDP. His father was the president of SNDP and Tusharhar was the vice president. Just a few months after the formation of the party, Tushar was named as the president of BDJS and his father stepped down from the party, giving Tushar complete control over BDJS.
His party had contested the Kerala Assembly elections in 2016 and had candidates on 37 seats out of 140. He did not win but got 4% of the total vote share; Which was impressive as a first-time party. The aim of BDJS was to unite all the Hindu organizations and minorities of Kerala and fight for all their rights as a united front. Tushar met leaders of many organizations but an alliance could not be formed.
In November 2016, Tushar formed an alliance with the BJP and the BDJS became part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Tushar was also appointed state coordinator of NDA in Kerala.
Ahead of the 2019 general elections, Rahul Gandhi had announced that he would contest from Amethi, Uttar Pradesh as well as Wayanad, Kerala. A few days later, Amit Shah announced that Thushar Vellappally would contest the Lok Sabha elections from Wayanad constituency in Kerala.

This came as a surprise to many as BDJS had already announced a candidate from the Wayanad seat. Subsequently the previous candidate withdrew and Tushar filed his nomination from Wayanad constituency, but he lost to Rahul Gandhi.

- In March 2018, the Kerala High Court allowed the Anti-Corruption and Vigilance Bureau to investigate Thushar Vellappally and his father. The bureau received several complaints of financial irregularities worth Rs 5,000 crore through SNDP.
- In May 2018, Thushar Vellappally and 6 others from SNDP were booked for allegedly siphoning off Rs 1.5 crore under the guise of a microfinance scheme meant to help the poor.
- In December 2018, he openly and strongly opposed the Supreme Court’s Sabarimala decision allowing women entry into the Sabarimala temple. He described the decision as disappointing and protested against it on social media.
- On 22 August 2019, Tushar was arrested in Ajman, UAE in a check bounce case worth Rs 19 crore. 10 years ago, Tushar’s former business partner Naseel Abdullah had given him a loan of 10 million dirhams, which Tushar repaid through an undated cheque, but the check bounced. NRI businessman, MA Yusuf Ali, intervened and granted bail to Tushar on 23 August 2019. Tushar was called to UAE on the pretext of an out-of-court settlement, but as soon as he sat down in a hotel for a meeting with Nasil. The police arrested him.

- BDJS has always relied heavily on the votes of the Ezhava community and Hindus. Tushar has always said that BDJS is a secular party and not just a Hindu right-wing party.
- Many people have accused Tushar and his family of corruption. It is also reported that his father Vellapalli Natesan has turned SNDP into a family business as many of his family members hold senior positions in SNDP and he has also accepted bribes from people who wanted to hold important positions in SNDP . ,
- Many SNDP members objected to Tushar continuing as SNDP vice-president even after becoming the BDJS president, but the objection was later removed.
