Thor: Love and Thunder is critically well received after it hits theaters in July
On July 8, 2022, the film opened in theaters in the United States. It received mixed reviews, including praise for Bale and Portman’s performances. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman said that, unlike Ragnarok, Thor: Love and Thunder kept its novelty to the end, despite opening with a “more uncomfortable” opening with Guardians of the Galaxy. Gleiberman specifically commended the film’s villain, the Butcher of God Gorra, and credited Waititi for keeping the film “emotionally alive”.
Todd Gilchrist of AV Club echoed Gleiberman’s comment in his review, writing:
“Natalie Portman and (especially) Christian Bale contribute more than enough acting capital to make Waititi comfortable, sometimes overjoyed, but always visually adventurous for his portrayal of Jason Aaron in the Mighty Thor comics, where (among other things) Portman’s Jane Foster gains heroic powers.”
He went on to say that Bale’s Gorr is one of Marvel’s most intriguing and lovable enemies since Killmonger in Michael B. Jordan’s Black Panther. Thor: Love and Thunder has a 65% rating from critics and 77% from the audience on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. In terms of box office receipts, while the current film has grossed more than $340 million in the United States, making it the highest-grossing Thor film ever, it still falls short of the worldwide gross. Thor’s Bridge: Ragnarok.
Everything you need to know about Thor 5
The post-credits sequence in the current release promises Marvel fans another movie based on Norse superhero mythology. However, Waititi hasn’t kept up with the latest developments in the Thor series.
Waititi explained to Insider:
“That surprised me too. I’m not kidding. I saw it in the cinema and was like, ‘Oh, damn it. Really?’ ‘What?’ even Chris asked. But, of course, he’s coming back. He’s the most interesting character. I mean, maybe I’m biased, but he’s the most interesting person to watch.”
Waititi said he would be interested in directing a second Thor movie if Hemsworth stayed at the place. According to recent rumors, Waititi has left the upcoming Thor movie due to the poor reception of Thor: Love and Thunder. Marvel has yet to confirm the news with fans.
