He began working on a doctoral thesis in philosophy. However, he eventually abandoned it due to disillusionment with job prospects in the field. And, thus also renouncing philosophy, Öhlinger went on to study Law at the end of 1962. He finished his studies at the Faculty of Law in just three years and received his doctorate in Law at the beginning of 1966.
Likewise, shortly before formally graduating at the end of 1965, Öhlinger had obtained a job as an assistant professor at the University of Innsbruck.
