There are special roles in Hollywood that mean a lot to people. These iconic roles mainly involve superheroes like Superman or Spiderman. It takes a special actor to take on that role. Horror movie characters rarely fall into this category.

However, Bill Skarsgard has managed to turn a child-eating clown into a Hollywood legend. Skarsgard is an amazing actor with a bright future. The friendly and likeable nature of him has also made him a fan favorite. This is the untold truth of Bill Skarsgard.

His brother and father introduced him to acting.

Bill was born in Sweden to actor Stellan Skarsgard and My Skarsgard. Bill grew up in a family of seven children and three of his brothers were actors. Stellan is a famous actor and has appeared in movies like The girl with the dragon tattoo, goodwill huntingand the Avengers franchise.

“…I went up to him and said, ‘I don’t know what to do, but I need to be in your movie.’ Eventually, I got the job, and that was something that I felt transcended what other people might think of me.”

Bill didn’t take the path of science, but his mother and brother did. They are both doctors. He appreciates that he has family members of his that save lives. However, he feels that the universe is not fair to people like doctors, who do very important jobs and are paid much less than actors.

He describes his role as Pennywise as the most intense role he has ever played.

Stephen King introduced Pennywise to the world when he wrote the horror novel, He. Tim Curry played the role of Pennywise in the 1990 miniseries based on King’s book. Curry received critical acclaim for his performance in the original miniseries.

Pennywise returned to screens around the world in 2017. Bill brilliantly played the child-eating clown in the hit movie. The role was not easy for Bill and he had to participate in several auditions. At one of the auditions, he had to appear in clown makeup. He also had to perfect a clown laugh. He drove to the audition wearing his clown makeup while he laughed hysterically in his car.

He told GQ that he wasn’t afraid of what people would think;

“Because there are two ways to do it: either you chicken out from the discomfort and humiliation of it all, or you really commit to staying in the character you are and using this absurdity to your advantage.”

Bill stayed in character and got the job. However, nothing could prepare him for the intensity that came with playing Pennywise. First of all, putting all the makeup on took two and a half hours. Second, the acting was very intense. Bill describes Pennywise as the most intense role he’s ever had to play. He told The New York Times;

“Normally, when you make a movie, you have those mundane days where you’re like, ‘Today is the scene where I have coffee’ with this character, there was none of that. Everything I did took 100 percent of my energy. He is by far the most exhausting character I’ve ever done.”

Bill played the role of Pennywise perfectly. She managed to scare the audience and some of the kids she was performing with. One of the children even burst into tears during one of the scenes. It became so intense for Bill that she began to see some kind of beauty in her character.

The role of Pennywise gave him nightmares, but he reprized the role in it’s chapter two

after concluding He, Bill returned to Sweden to get rid of the Pennywise persona. Bill admitted that he had several nightmares involving Pennywise. However, after spending time with his mom, he got rid of the evil clown. He told Entertainment Weekly that it felt like some kind of exorcism for him;

“It was a very quick turnaround from feeling better, like, oh my gosh, I’m relieved that I don’t have to deal with the darkness of the character. I likened it to an exorcism: he got out of my body and got rid of Pennywise’s toxins.”

However, he received the call to appear in it’s chapter two. Despite her problems with the shooting of the first film, she gladly accepted the invitation. According to Bill, she felt as if he had never left the set. She told Collider;

“… I was surprised how much of the character was already there. I instantly agreed again, like it was yesterday we wrapped the first one. It was just all there. So character work, preparation and discovery is almost intuitive, which is great. It’s a very strange thing, but I’m trying to enjoy the trip as much as I can.”

Due to his acting roles, Bill lives primarily in Los Angeles. However, he does not have a permanent residence there. He has been looking for a house or an apartment, but he doesn’t like American architecture. He told GQ that he doesn’t like the lighting in American homes;

“I find the Americans terribly bad at lighting. We are so deprived of light in winter that the Swedes are experts at it: in Swedish houses everything is very, very thought out, with a kind of warm, comforting light. Americans don’t have that sensitivity at all. It’s trivial things like that.”

Bill is still very attached to Sweden. He feels like a foreigner in the United States. He doesn’t want to commit to living in a place where he doesn’t feel attached. He spoke with Magazine Interview about his attachment to Sweden;

“It’s not about being proud of Sweden; it’s just a sense of belonging. Even if you have lived in one place for a long time, those early formative years will be a part of you forever and cannot be replaced.”

However, he has grown tired of not having his own space. He wants a place that he can call home. his said Magazine Interview who is looking for a cozy and renovated place in his native Sweden.
