Smith drew inspiration for his long neck from the Kayan tribe. The Kayan Lahwi people, also called the Padaung, are an ethnic group found in Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand. A notable aspect of their culture is the tradition of Padaung women adorning neck rings, which are brass rings worn around the neck that create an elongated visual effect. These women are often called “giraffe women.”
From around the age of five, many Padaung girls participate in this distinctive custom by having brass (and historically copper or gold) coils wound around their necks. A bedinsayah, a spiritual healer, performs the application. The actual length of the neck remains unchanged; instead, the illusion of an elongated neck is created by reshaping the clavicle (chest) and sloping shoulders.
