Kimberly Shannon Murphy, a renowned stunt performer with an extensive list of action-packed film credits to her name, recently shared her most harrowing professional experience while filming the post-apocalyptic blockbuster. Murphy described the incident saying: “My cable didn’t catch me, I probably fell 20 feet. We went out the window, so the glass had already fallen to the ground. And when I fell, I fell on the glass. Then my legs were raised above my head. “I just put my face on the glass.”
Fortunately, Murphy’s body remained unharmed, but his face suffered serious injuries, requiring approximately 60 stitches in the hospital. Amazingly, she persevered despite the pain and continued working, completing most of the day on set before seeking medical attention.
Despite the ordeal, Murphy had high praise for his co-star, Will Smith. He described Smith as “exactly the same person” one would expect and “super nice,” adding that he is one of his favorite actors to work with because of his kindness and appreciation for the crew.
However, a question that frequently arises regarding stars like Smith is whether they perform their own stunts. Murphy shed some light on this and said, “Um, you know, it’s always interesting. So my husband doubled for Tom Cruise for 11 years. So it’s really interesting when actors say that because some of them do, you know, some do everything they can, some are more physical than others, for sure.”
He explained that some actors, like Cameron Diaz, are eager to get more physically involved and even throw punches when possible. Still, when it comes to more risky stunts, it’s rare to see actors take on them. Murphy noted that Tom Cruise is one of the few actors he has personally witnessed performing such daring stunts.

Reflecting on the experience, he explained: “My whole face was ruined. We really did it. It was a dissident phone. So, it was like an old telephone where you hang up and those two things come out, like it was an old pay phone.”
Meticulous preparation
Meticulous preparations allowed for truly shocking moments, with the internal parts of the phone modified for security reasons. For Murphy, working on Tarantino’s film was a dream come true, as he experienced a unique and creative environment.
“Quentin just works a certain way. He keeps the filming crew very small. He handwrites all of his shot lists. That was really cool,” he recalled. “We would get it at the beginning of the day and see what we were going to film. And it was great to see him work as a filmmaker. “I had never worked with a director like him before.”
