The director of ‘The Hunger Games’ reveals a great ‘regret’ for the films and says he would not make the same mistake again

The Hunger Games became one of the most successful young adult film franchises of all time.

Based on three novels by author Suzanne Collins, the films starred Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson and told the story in four releases.

They may have all been box office hits, but director Francis Lawrence recently spoke about a big “regret” he had about how he handled the films.

Speaking to People, Francis addressed the decision to split the franchise’s final book into two films. “I totally regret it. I totally do it. I’m not sure everyone does, but I definitely do,” he admitted.

He acknowledged that there were reasons for the division. Plus, he gave the team more time to adapt what happened in the final book, which is full of exciting plots.

However, Francis was also aware of why the dramatic cliffhanger between films bothered fans.

“In a TV episode, if you have a cliffhanger, you have to wait a week or you can just binge and then you can watch the next episode. But I think making people wait a year seemed disingenuous to me, even though it wasn’t,” she explained. “Our intentions were not to be false.”

He added that it was a mistake he learned from when he returned to work at the The Hunger Games prequel movie: Ballad of songbirds and snakes.

The new film opens in theaters on November 17 and you can see a trailer here.
