With the latest chapter in the franchise teasing its future, director Michael Chaves offers an update on The Conjuring 4 after The Nun II‘s post-credits scene. Chaves, who previously helmed the loosely connected The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, returns to the James Wan-produced franchise with the sequel to the 2018 hit spinoff. The Nun II also sees the returns of Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene and Bonnie Aarons as the eponymous demon Valak, who embarks on a streak of murders of priests and nuns across Europe in search of a powerful artifact.

In honor of the movie’s release, SlashFilm caught up with Michael Chaves to break down The Nun II. When asked about the movie’s post-credits scene and how it sets up the in-development The Conjuring: The Last Rites, the franchise director noted that writing is still ongoing for the fourth mainline movie and acknowledged that “it could go a couple different ways,” but expressed his excitement for it and teased there is “a great finale” planned for it. I think that they’re still writing it. They’re still working on it. There’s definitely “Conjuring: Last Rites” is coming. And in terms of the exorcism of Maurice, that’s always been a center, a cornerstone marker in the timeline and I think it’s up to interpretation. It’s also, I think there’s a lot of things that need to align, so it could go a couple different ways. As an audience member, I would 100% see [a crossover of all Conjuring demons]. I couldn’t give away what I know about what’s being developed, but I know that they’re going to end with a bang. I know that there is a great finale being planned for “Last Rites” and as to what or who’s in it … I don’t want to give away any spoilers.

How The Nun 2’s Post-Credits Sets Up The Conjuring 4

The Nun II‘s post-credits scene, coming in the middle of the haunting credits comprised of archival footage and shots from the sequel, sees Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga returning as Ed and Lorraine Warren in their family home as they receive a phone call from Steve Coulter’s Father Gordon. Their daughter, Judy, answers the phone and tells them Gordon is calling about an emergency, though the exact nature of which is left unspecified.

At first glance, audiences are left to assume this is a flashback setting up the Warrens’ eventual exorcism of Jonas Bloquet’s Frenchie that would introduce the paranormal investigating duo to the horrific threat of Valak. However, eagle-eyed viewers will note that the Judy seen in the sequence is seemingly played by Sterling Jerins, confirming it to be the teenage incarnation of the Warrens’ daughter, thus taking place long after the exorcism seen near the middle of the original The Conjuring.

Much like the end of said 2013 franchise starter, The Nun II‘s post-credits scene seems to be a very loose setup for The Conjuring 4, leaving the door open for what case the Warrens encounter next while reassuring audiences their favorite duo would be back. Unlike prior teases, though, the scene does hint at a more urgent nature to the call, hinting at a higher-stakes story for the next chapter. Given The Conjuring: The Last Rites has been hinted to be the final mainline installment in the franchise, it will be interesting to see what comes next for the Warrens.
