The Bob’s Burgers Movie Ending Explained (In Detail)

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Bob’s Burgers Movie

20th Century’s The Bob’s Burgers Movie offers an entertaining summer adventure but its ending leaves some important details in need of explanation. The animated musical comedy is a theatrical spinoff of the animated sitcom, Bob’s Burgers, and definitely shows how The Bob’s Burgers Movie lives up to its namesake. Even after multiple COVID-19 delays that pushed its release almost two years later than originally planned, the movie has premiered to positive reception from both critics and casual audiences.

When a sinkhole swallows up the sidewalk and road in front of the Belchers’ restaurant, the family begins to worry they will not have enough business to make a loan payment to the bank. Later that night, Louise descends into the sinkhole to prove herself brave after a girl at school makes fun of her pink rabbit ears and calls her a baby. Louise finds a skeleton at the bottom of the sinkhole and the ensuing murder investigation makes business at the restaurant nonexistent. The skeleton turns out to be Wonder Wharf employee Cotton Candy Bob and Wonder Wharf owner, Kevin Kline’s Calvin Fischoeder, is arrested for the murder. Mr. Fischoeder also happens to be the Belchers’ wealthy landlord and Louise attempts to clear his name in order to have Mr. Fischoeder help the Belchers with their bank loan repayment. Meanwhile, Teddy (Larry Murphy) and the adult Belchers prepare a Bob’s Burgers food cart to sell burgers with, which they bring over to the Wonder Wharf.

The plot is fairly simple, just as a normal episode of Bob’s Burgers would be. Still, there are a few twists, namely Grover Fischoeder’s full plan, that may need some clarification. Here’s the ending of The Bob’s Burgers Movie explained.

Grover Fischoeder’s Full Plan Explained

Even though Louise first thought Felix Fischoeder, voiced by Zach Galifianakis in The Bob’s Burgers Movie cast, was Cotton Candy Dan’s murderer, she finds the real culprit to be Grover Fischoeder after seeing his distinct cuff links and the bite mark on his arm. Grover’s master plan is to frame the other two Fischoeders for the murder of the Wonder Wharf carny because he used Calvin’s gun to commit the crime six years ago. However, the body of Cotton Candy Dan was never found, as Grover hid him in a pile of dirt that was used in street repairs in front of Bob’s restaurant. Grover is finally able to continue with his plan in The Bob’s Burgers Movie when Kristen Schaal’s Louise Belcher finds the body in the newly opened sinkhole.

Grover’s next move anticipates Calvin and Felix fleeing from the murder charges and he rigs their submarine to sink and kill them. He also tries to burn down all of Wonder Wharf so he can build a larger, more profitable Wonder Wharf that aligns with his vision. Unfortunately for Grover, the Belchers are able to escape from his clutches and go on to expose his plot to the police, saving their restaurant in the process.

The Real Story Of Louise’s Pink Rabbit Ears

When Louise is called a baby by a girl in school, she sets out to prove herself brave in a multitude of ways. Even though she likes her pink rabbit ears, Louise believes Linda (John Roberts) made them for her because she was afraid on her first day of school. However, H. Jon Benjamin’s Bob tells Louise that she was brave on her first day of school and she didn’t even have her hat. Linda made it for Louise after the first day to celebrate her courage and as a reminder of Bob’s mom and Louise’s grandmother, who always wore a pink hat.

Bob and Linda get split up from Teddy when they accidentally destroy the memorial to Cotton Candy Dan. While Teddy escapes back to the restaurant with the Bob’s Burgers food cart, Bob and Linda get chased by a carny and a large yellow dog before they escape into the Mole Hill. The dog is actually also a carny who is dressed up as Dizzy Dog, the furry mascot of Wonder Wharf amusement park. While Dizzy Dog isn’t as memorable as Plopper from The Simpsons’ Movie, Dizzy Dog has actually been in multiple episodes of Bob’s Burgers and his likeness appears through the Wonder Wharf.

Why Jimmy Pesto Sr. Is Different In The Bob’s Burgers Movie

Jimmy Pesto Bob's Burgers

While Bob’s rival restaurateur Jimmy Pesto Sr. of Jimmy Pesto’s Pizzeria appears multiple times in The Bob’s Burgers Movie, the father of Jimmy Pesto Jr. isn’t as rowdy and antagonizing as he usually is in the Bob’s Burgers TV show. The character watches happily as the events involving the massive sinkhole unfold in front of Bob’s restaurant and Teddy even goes over to the pizzeria to watch the hockey game after escaping the carnies chasing him at Wonder Wharf. Jimmy Pesto Sr. doesn’t have any lines in The Bob’s Burger Movie, which is surprising. However, it’s because his voice actor Jay Johnston was barred from Bob’s Burgers at the end of 2021 following his involvement in the January 6th Capitol riot.

Why Characters In The Movie Sound Different Than In The Show

Much like Jimmy Pesto Sr., there are subtle differences with some of the minor characters in The Bob’s Burgers Movie. These characters are Channel 6 News reporter Olsen Benner and Wonder Wharf employee Mickey. Both characters are voiced by different actors in The Bob’s Burgers Movie from Bob’s Burgers. Olsen Benner is voiced by Pamela Adlon on the show, but by Nicole Byer in the film. Mickey is a more significant character in the Bob’s Burgers universe as he is a good friend of the Belcher family and even worked in the restaurant for an episode. Mickey is voiced by John Q. Kubin in the movie, replacing Bill Hader of SNL, It, and Barry fame.

Overall, The Bob’s Burgers Movie is a thoroughly enjoyable outing for the Belcher family and a great movie for those eager for more after the show’s recent twelfth season. The ending of the movie also creates new developments that the show can build on and address in its next seasons. As The Bob’s Burgers Movie sees continued success from critics and the box office, maybe a sequel will come in line with its renewal at FOX.
