Terrence Shannon Jr, 23, was charged with rape after the alleged incident in September. The event took place in Kansas, where he went to see a football game. The University of Illinois suspended Shannon from all team activities on Dec. 27, a day after the Douglas County (Kansas) District Attorney issued an arrest warrant. Terrence was not a member of the school’s travel group when the incident occurred on September 8.
Illinois said Thursday it has been aware of Shannon’s allegations since late September. His attorney, Mark P. Sutter, said his client is innocent of all charges. Shannon has been working with police since September and has always maintained his innocence, according to Sutter. The attorney went on to say that his client voluntarily surrendered less than 24 hours after formal charges were filed against him in Lawrence, Kansas.
