Taylor Swift Reveals Meaning Behind Several ‘Department of Tortured Poets’ Songs

Taylor Swift shares the inspiration behind several songs from her newly released album. The Department of Tortured Poets.

In an additional comment on Amazon Music, Swift shared that the album’s opening song, Fortnight, with Post Malone, “exhibits” many of the common themes that appear throughout the album. Among those themes are fatalism, longing, longing, and lost dreams.

“I think it’s a very fatalistic album,” Taylor Swift said, according to Deadline. “There are a lot of very dramatic lines in that about life and death and I love you, it’s ruining my life. These are very hyperbolic and dramatic things to say. But it’s that kind of album: it’s a dramatic, artistic, tragic vision of love and loss.”

Speaking of Fortnight, Swift also said that she had “always imagined” the song taking place in an “American town where the American dream you thought would happen to you didn’t happen.”

“You don’t end up with the person you loved,” he explained. “And now you have to live with it every day, wondering what it would have been like, maybe seeing them leave. And that’s a pretty tragic concept, really. So I just wrote from that perspective.”
