controversies
target of racism
In September 2023, Taral Patel revealed that he faced racist and hateful messages on social media. Online critics questioned his American birth, accused him of trying to take away freedom and guns, and made derogatory comments about his faith and community. Patel, a Democrat, stressed that while he welcomes criticism of his policies, these attacks are unacceptable. He highlighted the diversity of Fort Bend County and blamed misguided fear spread by people like former President Donald Trump for such hatred. Patel, who grew up in the county, expressed pride in being American and focused his campaign on hard work and respect for all communities. He issued a statement saying,
As your Democratic candidate for County Commissioner, I am always open to criticism of my policy positions and stances on issues. However, when supporters of my Republican opponent decide to hurl racist, anti-immigrant, anti-Hindu, or otherwise hateful slurs at my family, faith, community, coworkers, and me – that crosses a line.
Since declaring for Commissioner, I have worked tirelessly to connect with the diverse communities who call our county home.
Our campaign is based on these values: compassion, hard work and respect for all.
