Syed Akbaruddin was inducted into the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1985. Since joining the IFS, Syed has served in several positions in the Ministry of External Affairs of India. From 1995 to 1998, he served as First Secretary in the Indian Mission to the United Nations and focused on UN Security Council reform and peace-keeping. He also served as a member of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ) from 1997 to 1998. Being fluent in Arabic, he has served as a counselor in the Indian High Commission, Islamabad. Syed has also served as the Consul General of India in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from 2000 to 2004. Prior to this, he was the First Secretary in Riyadh and the Second and Third Secretaries in Cairo, Egypt. From 2006 to 2011, he was on deputation to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. During this period, he also served as Head of the External Relations and Policy Coordination Unit and Special Assistant to the Director-General of the IAEA. Syed served as the spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs from 2012 to 2015. He was also a member of the Indian delegation to the UNGA and various multilateral and bilateral meetings at the summit and ministerial level. He effectively used social media tools to extend the reach of public diplomacy.
