Netflix has renewed Sweet Tooth for a second season. The fantasy drama series was developed by Jim Mickle (Stake Land) and premiered in June 2021. The Netflix series is based on the limited comic book series, which was published by Comics’ Vertigo imprint from 2009 until 2013. However, a sequel called Sweet Tooth: The Return was released in 2020. The story follows Gus (Christian Convery), who is half human and half deer, also known as a hybrid. Along with other hybrids, he must work to survive in this post-apocalyptic landscape.
The finale of Sweet Tooth season 1 left Gus in a dangerous situation. After being captured by General Abbott and the Last Men Army, the hybrid children are being kept locked up in the zoo while Dr. Singh tries to discover a cure. While Gus has finally found the family and sense of belong that he was looking for, there are plenty of dangers left unanswered by the end of the season. While Dr. Singh wants to aid Rani, he wrestles with his own moral compass regarding hybrid children.
It was confirmed through Variety that Sweet Tooth has been renewed for a second season by Netflix. The upcoming season is set to consist of eight, one-hour long episodes total. This news comes only a little under two months after the first season premiered. Mickle talked about his excitement being able to bring this story to the world and to be able to continue the characters’ story. See below for his statement:
“It’s been equally thrilling and heartwarming to experience how people around the world have been falling in love with our deer-boy. We couldn’t be more excited to continue our collaboration with Netflix and keep following Gus and his friends on their extraordinary journey.”
Sweet Tooth includes social commentary in the form of a post-apocalyptic environment through how it approaches the nature of inequality. During an age of a worldwide pandemic, the show’s topic has been seen as particularly relevant, even if it’s not directly addressing what the world has gone through over the course of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. With a second season in the pipeline, there is sure to be further exploration of the theme that there’s more to life than survival, as the characters’ journeys move forward.
Sweet Tooth season 1 has been positively received by critics and audiences. Given the amount of popularity among film and television content based on graphic novels and comic books, it’s no surprise that Netflix sees continued potential in Sweet Tooth. With the comic having made a return, it’s the perfect time for the television series to continue pursuing the story. There are certainly a lot of doors that remain open and questions that are unanswered at the end of the first season, so fans of the show will certainly be excited to know that a second season is in the works. Stay tuned for more details on the upcoming season as they’re released.
