Suvendu Adhikari is an Indian politician from West Bengal. Suvendu, once considered a close aide of All India Trinamool Congress (known as AITC or TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee, resigned from TMC in December 2020 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Suvendu Adhikari was born on Tuesday, 15 December 1970 (age 50 years; as in 2020) in Contai, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Contai PK College, followed by an MA from Rabindra Bharati University in 2011.

Suvendu Adhikari started his political journey by joining the Indian National Congress (INC) in 1995. In 1995, he was elected as a councilor from Contai Municipality of West Bengal on a Congress ticket. In 1998, after the establishment of TMC as a political party, Suvendu was among the first few to take primary membership of TMC. Adhikari entered the West Bengal Assembly for the first time in 2006 as a TMC MLA from Kanthi South constituency. In the same year, he was also elected as the Mayor of Kanthi Municipal Corporation.

He played a major role in the Singur-Nandigram land movement in 2007. This movement was started in protest against the decision of the then ruling Left Front government in West Bengal to set up a special economic zone by acquiring 1000 acres of land of the people. Land in a village. During the entire movement, he was seen at the forefront of the movement. The success of the movement helped expand TMC’s political base across West Bengal.

He made his Lok Sabha debut in 2009 by defeating his nearest rival Laxman Seth of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from the Tamluk constituency by a margin of about 173,000 votes. He defeated SK in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Ibrahim Ali of CPI(M) from Tamluk constituency and once again won the election from the constituency. Ahead of the 2016 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, Suvendu was fielded by TMC against Abdul Qadir Sheikh of the Left Front and Indian National Congress alliance in the Nandigram constituency. After winning the election, he resigned as Tamluk MP to join the assembly. After the formation of the TMC government for the second consecutive time on 27 May 2016, he was given the responsibility of heading the Transport Ministry in the state.

In November 2020, amid speculations of a growing rift between Suvendu Adhikari and TMC-supremo Mamata Banerjee, Suvendu started resigning from state government posts one by one. Firstly, he resigned from the post of Chairman of Hooghly River Bridge Commission (HRBC) on 26 November 2020. He then stepped down as the Transport Minister of West Bengal on 27 November 2020. Finally, he filed his resignation as Nandigram MLA, which was accepted on 21 December 2020. However, when the Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly initially refused to accept his resignation on technical grounds, he gave up the primary membership of TMC on 17 December 2019. Two days later, on 19 December 2020, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a BJP rally in the company of Amit Shah.

He defeated Mamata Banerjee by 1736 votes from Nandigram constituency in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. On 10 May 2021, he was elected as the leader of the opposition by the BJP in the West Bengal Assembly.

Controversy

  • In 2010 he was accused of supplying ammunition to Maoists in Nandigram to overthrow the Left Front government in West Bengal.
  • In 2014, Suvendu Adhikari’s name came up in the financial scam of Saradha Group. This came after a former employee of Saradha Group, in his testimony, said that company chief Sudipto Sen had met the officer before fleeing to Kashmir. Then Suvendu had rejected any such allegations against him.
