Sultan Al Neyadi is an Emirati astronaut and member of the UAE Armed Forces, who became the second person from the UAE to go to space and the first person from the country to serve on a long-term mission on the International Space Station (ISS). and conduct a spacewalk.

Sultan Saif Mufta Hamad Al Neyadi was born on Saturday, 23 May 1981 (age 42 years; as of 2023) in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Their zodiac sign is Gemini.

Neyadi completed his schooling from Um Ghaffa Primary Boys School and Um Ghaffa Secondary School in the United Arab Emirates after which he moved to the United Kingdom. There, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering with honors from the University of Brighton in 2004. Subsequently, he moved back to the United Arab Emirates, where he joined Zayed II Military College for further studies. Later, he joined the UAE Armed Forces and served as a network security and communications engineer. In 2008, he moved to Australia, where he attended Griffith University and earned a master’s degree in Information and Network Security and a PhD in Information Technology (Data Leakage Prevention). As a PhD student, Sultan published more than six research papers.

Application and initial training
The UAE government launched an astronaut program in 2017 with the intention of creating the country’s first astronaut corps. More than 4000 people submitted applications for this program. In September 2018, Ruler of Dubai Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced that Sultan Al Neyadi and Major Al Mansouri had been shortlisted from among all applicants to undergo astronaut training at Dubai’s Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre. After completing their initial training in the UAE in 2019, Mansouri and Neyadi were sent to Russia, where they underwent astronaut training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Moscow’s Star City for a year.

Advanced Training with NASA
After completing their training in Russia, in 2020, they were sent to Houston, Texas, where both were given an additional six months of training under the 2018 Implementation Arrangement (IA) signed between the UAE and NASA. They received training in operating equipment and machinery, dealing with low pressure and ammonia leaks, and extinguishing fires on the International Space Station (ISS). They also trained in severe cold weather and practiced routine activities such as food preparation. Additionally, they learned communication skills to interact with ground stations as well as operate cameras for event documentation and Earth photography from space. In total, he completed over 90 courses with over 1,400 training hours.

Next, Al Neyadi and Al Mansouri began training at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Their training includes adapting to microgravity encountered during space travel, mastering the operation of an Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU), gaining skills for ISS maintenance, undergoing Incapacitated Crew Rescue (ICR) exercises, and receiving both theoretical and practical training. After 20 months of training, both received NASA astronaut badges, confirming their successful completion of basic training and eligibility for space missions. Later, he went to Canada, where he was taught how to operate the ISS’s robotic arm that helps receive cargo sent from Earth.

Reaching the ISS
In 2019, the UAE government announced that Major Al Mansouri was selected as the first Emirati astronaut for a mission to the ISS. Additionally, Neyadi was made Mansouri’s replacement, meaning Neyadi would take Mansouri’s place on the space mission if Mansouri could not participate for any reason. On July 25, 2022, Neyadi was selected to participate as Mission Specialist 1 on Expedition 69 to the International Space Station as part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-6 mission. This mission was the UAE’s first long-term mission in space. After being selected Neyadi said,
Thank you very much, Your Excellency. My selection as the first Arab astronaut for a long-duration mission is a great honor and responsibility that I accept with a strong desire to raise the UAE flag high into space once again.
He launched aboard SpaceX’s rocket Dragon at the Kennedy Space Center in the US on 2 March 2023 and reached the ISS at approximately 6:40 am UTC on 3 March 2023.

Aboard the ISS, Neyadi’s team conducted more than 250 experiments, of which he was a part of more than 20. According to sources, Neyadi volunteered to be a subject in several experiments conducted on the ISS. In an interview he talked about this and said,
We ourselves are the subjects. We will have a lot of sensors when we do the experiment. These machines record our sleep, our vascular activities, breathing, etc. There is radiation in space and the muscles become loose. How we control (or reduce) these things is also part of our medical experiments.

He participated in research efforts to assist NASA in preparing for Moon missions and other exploratory missions in deep space. His team conducted tests on fluidics (investigation of fluid dynamics in space) as well as analyzed how the material burns and reacts in microgravity and different atmospheric conditions. He also contributed to the study of rhythmic motion of cardiac tissue in space as well as the development of cutting-edge technology for 3D-printing human organs.

In April 2023, he became the first UAE astronaut to perform a spacewalk, which lasted approximately seven hours on the starboard side of the ISS. He returned to Earth from the ISS in September 2023.

- He is a trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter and has competed in several martial arts competitions in the UAE. He won a medal at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour 2017-2018.
