Sukumar started his career as a director and writer in 2004 with the Telugu film ‘Arya’. He later directed and wrote several Telugu films, including Jagadam (2007), 100% Love (2011), 1: Nenokkadine (2014), Nannaku Prematho (2016), and Pushpa: The Rise (2021).

- He follows a vegetarian diet. In an interview, he told that when he was six years old, one of his favorite chickens was killed and cooked. After witnessing the slaughter and feeling bad about it, he decided to adopt a vegetarian diet.
- Before starting work as a director he worked as a lecturer in a college for six years. He taught mathematics and physics at Aditya Junior College, Kakinada. Later he started assisting big directors as a writer.
- He has his own production banner named ‘Sukumar Writings’.

- According to Sukumar, he met his wife at the screening of his first film ‘Arya’. After dating for some time, they married each other, but Thabitha’s family did not initially accept the marriage.
- While talking about his film ‘Pushpa’ in an interview, he said that earlier he wanted to make ‘Pushpa’ a web series, but later he changed his mind and after some research on it, he made it a film. .
- The 2021 film ‘Pushpa: The Rise – Part 1’ was released in six languages including Telugu. The film became a superhit. It did a business of around Rs 10 crore in the first week of its release. Worldwide earning of Rs 128 crore. In an interview, Sukumar talked about his experience of working in Pushpa and said,
I have learned that despite competition from ‘Spider-Man’, our film has created a record in the Nizam region. We did not do enough publicity in Hindi due to lack of time. SS Rajamouli garu kept instigating me to campaign. I told him that my film is not ‘RRR’ or ‘KGF’. He said that if I believe that it is a pan-Indian film, then it will be one. Our film has earned Rs 4 crore in North India (Hindi version) on the first day. Bunny is quite popular among the Hindi audience. His popularity has given the film such a market.”
- In 2021 he did a noble deed by funding Rs 18 lakh to the school where he studied in his childhood. He helped build two new classrooms in the government school of Mattaparru village.
