Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi- a Karni Sena worker
As of 2018, Karni Sena had three major factions, Shri Rajput Karni Sena led by Lokendra Singh Kalvi, Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena Samiti led by Ajit Singh Mamdoli, and Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena led by Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi. The parent organisation, Karni Sena (or Shri Rajput Karni Sena) was formed in 2006, and Ajit Singh Mamdoli was its first president. The main objective of the organization was to ensure reservation for Rajputs. Other objectives included sidelining Rajput personalities in textbooks and encouraging Rajput legislators in the government. In the 2008 Rajasthan Assembly elections, Karni Sena supported the Congress with the condition that a certain number of tickets would be allotted to Rajputs. During the talks, Kalvi broke away from the organization due to disagreements within Karni Sena. In 2010, Kalvi joined the Congress and founded his own Shri Rajput Karni Sena (SRKS). Mamdoli filed a case against SRKS of Kalvi for using the name of his already registered organisation. The matter is pending in the court. Meanwhile, Kalvi appointed Sukhdev Singh Gogamedhi as the state president of his faction.
In 2015, Gogamedi was removed from the organization due to criminal charges, and he later founded his own faction named Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena. On 24 June 2017, the encounter of Indian gangster Anand Pal Singh became a rallying point for Rajput organisations. He became a cult figure among many Rajputs and Ravan Rajput youth, who saw him as a protector of the Rajputs against the rival Jat community. The gathering ended violently as railway tracks were uprooted, public property was damaged and one person was reportedly killed in police firing.
In 2017, Karni Sena gained national attention when it started protests against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Padmaavat (2018), starring Deepika Padukone in the lead role. Both Kalvi-led Karni Sena and Gogamedi-led Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena protested. The organizations have alleged that the film has hurt Rajput sentiments by showing romantic scenes between Queen Padmini of Chittor and Alauddin Khilji in a dream sequence. Ahead of the film’s release in January 2018, Karni Sena led violent protests in various districts across India and also vandalized theaters screening the film. Earlier, the organizations had also protested against the Bollywood films Jodhaa Akbar (2013) and Veer (2010). In April 2023, SRRKS organized a Kesariya Mahapanchayat in Jaipur demanding increase in EWS reservation from 10 percent to 14 percent and formation of Kshatriya Rajput Welfare Board by the state government. He demanded the Central Government to relax the conditions of EWS reservation in Central Government recruitments.
